Happy New Year Rock Class 101 Community!

We are back with site member challenge #58! WOW, there has now been over 2,900+ members participating in our challenges! If you’ve sat on the sidelines, please join us for this month’s challenge! Challenges are a fun way to stay motivated and a great way to meet fellow ukulele players who are passionate about learning and becoming better players. 🙂

And I offer feedback on ALL submissions!

Please watch the video above and read instructions below carefully for details/instructions on this month’s challenge.

Pick 1 from the following 5 RC101 Lessons:

    1) “St. Anne’s Reel” – This traditional Irish folk song has a trick up its sleeve! It’s performed with a rhythmic backbeat AND a triple pick right hand technique. (Steven’s Lesson)

Note: This song is the capstone performance piece from the Triplet Strum Magic Course! While you can play this song using traditional fingerstyle technique, it’s encouraged that you go through the course and give the new playing style a try. 🙂

    2) “Five Foot Two, Eyes Of Blue” – Learn a vintage ukulele tune that uses four expressive strumming techniques. (Christopher’s Lesson)

Note: The four techniques are taught in complete detail in the course, Strumming Techniques: Beyond the Island Strum. This song is the Capstone performance piece from the course. Therefore, it’s recommended that you take the course before attempting the etude, as it will set you up for success with learning this piece. 🙂

    3) “Dream a Little Dream of Me” * – Learn two beautiful melodies which help you develop barre chord technique. (Matt’s Lesson)

    * Taught in its entirety for FREE!

    4) “Here Comes the Sun” * – A classic Beatles tune that’s perfect for the intermediate fingerstyle player. (Andrew’s Lesson)

    * Taught in its entirety for FREE!

    5) “St. James Infirmary” – A hauntingly beautiful melody entangled in a harmony of Jazz and Blues, this fingerstyle arrangement is ideal for the seasoned intermediate player. (Evan’s Lesson)

** If you need assistance with how to record yourself check out our FREE course on recording audio/video and/or private message me and I will be happy to help you out. **

    YouTube (For Video) – https://www.youtube.com/create_channel

    SoundCloud (For Audio) – https://soundcloud.com/signin

    2. Submit individually, as a reply, IN THIS POST.

    3. Feel free to submit more than one video for the challenge, but additional videos will not count as extra entries into the raffle for the prize.

    4. Have fun and don’t be intimidated by this challenge!!! Use this challenge to help you set goals and complete them by a deadline. You can also use this as an opportunity to chat with your fellow Rock Class 101 members and share tips or tricks on this challenge that you think are useful.

    5. You must perform the entire piece to receive an entry into the prize raffle. Performance must be submitted by the deadline listed (in #1) above to gain an entry in the raffle, as well as, to receive feedback.

    * Note: In my opinion, it is better to show progress versus perfection with these challenges. So if you are a beginner and can only play the first couple of measures. That is completely ok. If you play two more measures of the next challenge piece than you did the previous one, you are on track to getting better. This is what these challenges are about… you learning ukulele and getting better. Remember we are all here to support you no matter what your current playing level is.

I’m going for “Here comes the sun” since it’s the first lesson for RC101. The pieces done by all the Teachers are great. Evan is amazing. I cannot believe he was 13 when he did that 😆. Congrats Evan. Keep it up. You are an inspiration to us all.

Question: Does it matter if I use a High G or Low G uke for “Here comes the sun”?

It will work on low G, Gi Gi. The only thing I’d change is the Am9 in bar 18. I’d strum/pluck only the bottom 2 strings (A and E).

Hi Andrew, I really like the songs, Dream a Little Dream of me and St James Infirmary. Can either of these be played with a Low G.
    Thanks,
    Lynn

@lynnzo – I’d go with St. James. It works better on low G outta those 2 🙂

Question. May I change the D7 in Dream a little dream of me to this bar chord?

@charles605 – If you do that, you’ll lose the melody note on top (5th fret on A). So don’t want to change it to that 😉

Ok, I’ve got some arthritis in my left hand trying to find a way to do it. After one day I can play a sweet melody around the song but it’s my own version.

Yes, I have to agree, @Charleston – that is one of the great strengths of RC101 as an online class. You really have teachers!
