Overview

The Makala MK-S and the Kala KA-15S are wonderful instruments for starting out on. They are also great if you are looking to add a "beater" uke to your collection. Priced at $50, they offer a ton of bang per buck.

The Pros

Exceptional value for the money. Out of the box, my ukulele played extremely well and had no tuning issues. The action was low, but not buzzy. In other words, the string height was in a perfect parallel to the neck. A lot of beginner instruments come with awful setups making it harder to play. This was not an issue with the Makala. My instrument had great intonation. What this means is that as you play throughout the neck, the notes are all in tune. Many beginner ukes are built poorly and when you play higher up the neck the notes may be sharp or flat, resulting in an out-of-tune sound.

The Cons

Really the only con holding this ukulele back were the cheap strings it came with. But, according to Makala this ukulele now comes equipped with Aquila Stings. Aquila are the industry standard and are my favorite uke strings.

The Bottom Line

I can't say enough great things about this uke! I really enjoyed owning it and I know you will too!

Street Price: $50.
