Below is the lesson for “Little Trouble in Big China” by Rock Class 101.
Helpful Tips
Learn a fantasy song inspired by Chinese and Japanese mythology. Recently, I had the opportunity to watch Big Trouble in Little China. If you haven’t seen it, I highly recommend it! It’s a wild ride and the perfect movie to watch after a long work week.
In the movie, the main character (Kurt Russell) goes on a journey to save a woman who’s been captured by an ancient sorcerer. This song mimics the adventure he faces! Theme 1 represents his quest to get into the headquarters, where all the bad guys live. While theme 2 showcases what happens when the showdown begins! As such, you can hear how theme 1 is soft and subtle, while theme 2 has tension in spades.
To give this song an authentic feel, I composed it using the In pentatonic scale and the harmonic minor scale. Both of which can be heard in traditional Japanese music.
