“Fingerpicking Etude no. 17” – Rock Class 101

Below is the lesson for “Fingerpicking Etude no. 17”.

Helpful Tips

In this etude, you’ll learn how to subtly use dynamics to create a significant emotional impact. By incorporating dynamics into our playing, we are essentially altering the volume of notes and passages to create contrast. This transforms a piece from sounding linear, to having highs and lows, tension and release.

The key with dynamics is to tastefully incorporate it into your playing. Here’s a good analogy: Think of dynamics as if it were seasoning for food. Too little seasoning leaves an underwhelming taste, while using too much results in the food becoming overwhelming. It’s the happy medium – that’s the goal with dynamics, and that’s what our focus will be on in this lesson.
