“Fingerpicking Etude no. 5” – Rock Class 101

Below is the lesson for “Fingerpicking Etude no. 5”

Helpful Tips

Learn two beautiful melodies that are fingerpicked entirely using the Travis picking technique. Travis picking, named after Merle Travis, is a repetitive right-hand picking pattern where the underlying chords continually change.

A couple of things to keep in mind when playing this piece are timing and note volume. The piece should be played at a steady tempo through both melodies, with a ritardando in bars 11–12 and 23–24. It’s also important to maintain a consistent volume across all picked notes. In other words, try to fingerpick every note with the same amount of pressure, to produce an even volume level.
