“Amazing Grace” – Traditional

Below is the lesson for “Amazing Grace”.

Helpful Tips

This arrangement uses a swung feel and features 3 variations on the melody. I have listed these variations as Melodies A, B, and C. Think of Melody A as being lower in pitch and using more chords. While, Melody B and C takes us higher in pitch and incorporates more ‘licks’.

Think of your favorite versions of ‘Amazing Grace’. This is a song known for its emotion. By using dynamics and being loose on timing, we can create ‘feeling’ in our playing. For example, starting out at a slower tempo and gradually increasing in speed throughout the song is one way of playing loose with the timing. An example of using dynamics could be: playing stronger in certain sections and softer in others.
