“Free Fallin'” – Tom Petty

Below is the lesson for “Free Fallin'” by Tom Petty.

Helpful Tips

This arrangement tastefully blends fingerpicking and strumming with a percussive backbeat. For most of this song, you’ll be adding a chunk or tap on beats 2 and 4. Chunks and taps differ from one another. A chunk is a percussive strumming technique that creates a sharp, muted sound by stopping the strings immediately after striking them. Whereas, a tap is when you use your thumb to tap on the ukulele’s body (above the strings). If either of these techniques is new to you, check out these lessons below:

Chunk Technique Tap Technique
Learn two ways to chunk! Take this technique a step further by playing a melody note while tapping!

If you’d like to simplify the arrangement, feel free to remove the chunks and/or taps and just focus on playing the melody notes and chords. Have fun with it! This is a really enjoyable song to play!
