“Hard Times Come Again No More” – American Parlor Song

Below is the lesson for “Hard Times Come Again No More” by Stephen Foster.

Helpful Tips

An enduring classic from the 19th century, we’ve arranged this heartfelt tune as a duet for high and low G ukulele. Written by Stephen Foster in 1854, this song gained popularity during the American Civil War as a way for folks to express and cope with suffering.

One thing I love about this arrangement is how the melody switches between the two instruments. Sometimes the high G ukulele carries the melody while the low G plays the accompaniment, and then it flips, with the low G taking over the melody while the high G supports with harmony.

No matter which ukulele part you choose to learn, you’ll get experience with both playing styles: lead and rhythm.
