How to Use Rubato on Ukulele – EP017

Create More Emotion in Your Performances by Using Rubato

Live Lessons EP017 – Published April 16, 2020

Rubato is a stylistic approach used to amplify emotion in music. This is accomplished through tempo alteration, specifically via speeding up or slowing down in sections. When executed properly, it can add a “human element” to your performance. This creates a nice contrast to playing perfectly in-time, which can come across as sounding robotic.

This session explains when and how to implement rubato. We’ll also cover the pitfalls of abusing it… which can sound like you are playing “out of time”. This lesson uses our arrangement of “Jurassic Park” as an example song.
