Below is the lesson for “Duality” by Rock Class 101.
Helpful Tips
Learn a thought-provoking duet for lead and rhythm ukulele. This composition was inspired by the drama series Mad Men. In the show, the central character, Don Draper, is conflicted due to the tension between his constructed identity and his inner struggles. He has a hidden past; he was born Dick Whitman, a poor, troubled farm boy, yet he reinvented himself as Don Draper, a suave and successful advertising executive. Don Draper embodies two identities in one person. On the surface, he is the confident, charismatic ad executive, but underneath, he carries the weight of his original identity as Dick Whitman, a man with a troubled past.
Metaphorically speaking, this is similar to a coin. On one side, we have heads; on the other, tails. Two sides that are polar opposites, yet both are found on one coin. For this composition, I wanted the A Melody to represent Don’s outward reflection of confidence, while the B Melody reflects Dick’s lack of it. But, like the coin analogy, both melodies must come together to sound as if they were one song, not two.
