I am just learning the slide lesson. And I have a question to the Vibrato in Lick 4.
When you do the Vibrato and move your finger up and down – does the string always scratch on the wood or do you lift it a little bit?
When I try it, it scratches and make a noise on the wood. The string does not ring longer. Furthermore I cannot get the speed.
And do I see right, that you use the fingers of the right hand as an anchor to stabilise the uke?
Hi Monika, this is a tough one to answer without actually being able to play your instrument. I can say that in the past, I’ve noticed some fretboards feel like the string grinds against the wood, kind of like what you’re describing. I’m not sure why some are like that, so that might be a better question to ask Mike at Uke Republic.
You shouldn’t lift pressure when doing vibrato as doing so cuts the sound short. You may want to check out our lesson on vibrato for help with the mechanics of the technique.
I don’t use my right-hand fingers to anchor or stabilize the ukulele. I use the same holding technique for slides as I do for all playing styles. I’ll share a video below that I made for another member with a few tips on proper holding technique. I’ll also include two additional lessons that touch on this topic. Here is the first lesson and the second lesson I recommend reviewing.
I only have a little soprano, and I perhaps I can try it on the tenor of a friend next week. Then I will see, if it is my technique or my instrument. 🙂
In the meantime I will start to train for the November challenge. I definetely need a better uke. 😉
