Hey guys, we are back with Live Lesson EP036! This month’s topic is: Scales & Modes Explained (Part 1).

Over the next two sessions, you’ll learn how scales and modes interact with each other. This month, we’ll look at relative modes. Which is a great starting point for learning how to solo up and down the neck.

This month’s topic should stir up some great questions! So please post all you have below and I hope you guys join us for the live stream. 🙂

Ok.. wow, this lesson was awesome. I think I’ve had a bit of a breakthrough moment and wanted to clarify..

At first I thought you had to choose a mode and play in that mode permanently during the solo.. this was always difficult on the Uke as there are only so many ‘E’s’ or ‘D’s’ so the solos sounded a little repetitive.

But after this lesson I started playing first position D Dorian… then switched to first position C ilonian then moved up the neck started playing e Phrygian using 3/4 position and then changed to a minor pentatonic to go higher …

So what I think I’ve realised is you can use the modes to basically create different sounds/emotions in the same solo .. and it’s ok to do this…
