…A bit of HELP/CLARIFICATION please.
1. From Understanding Theory ….Module 2 Unit 4The below is from “Altering chords to create color/harmony”
9 = 2 11 = 4 13 = 6
Finding tensions on chords will be very simple when you can say “What’s the 9th on this chord? Oh, it’s just the 2nd note of the scale etc… Therefore, I recommend to memorize all the notes in every key.
I understand the numerical relationships above the octave. My question here is what do you mean exactly about memorizing all notes in every key? Is that simply knowing that A has 3#s E has 4#s etc. and what those #s or bs are for all 12 roots?2.
Then…From Module 3 Unit 1. Soloing in a Scale…this question“A great way to practice these five positions is to call out
the scale degree and/or the note value while you play through them.”In the first diagram (C Form) going from low to high starting at the open 4th string on a low G and ending on the 5th fret of the a string would the call out be 5-6-7-1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9?
AND
In the 2nd Diagram (A Form) is the callout based on C Scale or Am Scale? C = 6-7-1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9-10 OR
Am = 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9-10-11-12I can memorize and practice the patterns, but am not clear on the Scale Value call outs.
Have I over complicated this concept and have it wrong?

AndrewKeymasterHi Rick, great questions! Let’s knock em out 🙂
1) Exactly! You’ll want to get to the point where you know without thinking what the extensions are.
2) All of the forms are based out of the C major scale. You are correct for the first diagram. For the second diagram, the root is shown as the hollow circle (C). You can start and stop on those hollow notes (C) which will help your ear hear the C major scale better. But you should be aware of the surrounding notes in each position that extend beyond the root.
BTW – I’d recommend calling it as 1-7 without worrying about extensions. For ex:
