“Wonder Part 2” – Rock Class 101

Below is the lesson for “Wonder Part 2” by Rock Class 101.

Helpful Tips

This cute sounding fingerstyle song has three themes with each theme focusing on a different aspect of playing. Theme 1 starts off fairly easy with a vamp between open strings and a single fretted note. In the second half of this theme, it gets a bit harder as it introduces movement. In this section, you’ll move the same chord shape from the 2nd fret up to the 7th fret and back down.

This can be tricky because oftentimes when we move the same chord shape up and down the neck, fingers can fall out of place and into the wrong frets. In the lesson video, I’ll be giving you tips to overcome this hurdle.

Moving onto Theme 2, you’ll use a fingerpicking technique called picado that involves us using the index and middle fingers in an alternating picking fashion. This is a great technique for building fingerpicking speed and is also used to create a bright, punchy tone. If you are new to this technique, check out this lesson to learn the mechanics behind it.

Theme 3 sees a return to a more traditional chord melody type of playing. In this section, you’ll utilize a 3 finger approach for fingerpicking chords and melody notes.

Songwriting Tips

This composition is a continuation on a couple of themes from my other original song, “Wonder (Part 1)”. In the intro of the lesson video, I’ll share a songwriting tip on how I used the Part 1 song to inspire the Part 2 song without making them sound identical.
