Hi Andrew (and any members gracious enough to weigh in),

I am looking to buy a tenor ukulele. I currently play a Lanikai solid spruce top concert uke. I like the uke’s sound, but the intonation and action are off. The intonation on the C string runs very sharp for the first 5 frets. I currently have it at the shop to see if they can help address this problem.

I am considering a Mainland solid tenor mahogany vs cedar, but would also consider a Kala or Ohana not far off from that price range. It is challenging to choose, given that none of these ukes are available locally for me to play. I have been looking at Uke Republic and there are several nice options to consider, but even with watching YouTube videos demonstrating the instruments, it’s very hard to tell which one to choose.

Thank you so much for this wonderful site, I have benefited greatly from your instruction. You are an excellent teacher!

Hi Lillah! Give Mike a call on Tuesday, he’ll be able to compare/contrast all those models for you 🙂

You can also contact Mim’s Uke on ebay or reverb. She can also create a video for demoing the different ukeleles you are interested in.

For what it’s worth, I just reserved a Pono ATPC (solid acacia, pro classic) and should be with me third week of December (loooong wait!!) Went with the Pono because I only heard good things about it and it looks great

I have a few Ukulele’s and they are all tenor; I’ve bought them all online. I have found that I can choose the wood and sound from videos (alot of videos though). The part that I found more challenging is the feel of the neck. I definitely have grown into the ukes I have, but still gravitate to one in particular because of how it feels to hold it. So if you are able to see anything live to understand your preferences, that would help. Even if you can’t see the ones you are considering…you can get an idea of the specifics you like then ask…weather it’s Mike or Mim- I’m sure they are all helpful. Good Luck!

Thank you guys so much for your replies. I went to every decent ukulele shop in my region that was less than 2 hours away, and of course none of them have the ukes that I am interested in. To complicate matters, I have discovered the Romero Creations tiny tenor and have been checking that one out online. Ugh, decisions decisions.

Finding a quality tenor that really speaks to you can be difficult when you want to make play them before buying. I feel somewhat spoiled with my Kala Elite Koa tenor. I liked it so much that when I went looking for a second good tenor, I didn’t see much that really impressed me. I was interested in getting a Kala Elite “doghair” mahogany, but no one seemed to have one in stock at the time. Taking your time on that really good tenor might be a good idea. I feel really lucky that my first ukulele turned out to be one that I really love. “if you don’t love it you’re not going to play it”. I haven’t tried Mainland Ukes, and have heard that they are very nice.

OMG I loved the look of the black Kala dog hair- looks like my Lykoi cat!!!
I was very tempted to go for that, but really – tenors are too big for me 😔

I have a question for anyone that may know the answer to this… I just bought a Luna tribal tenor ukulele. My question is… Do all tenor ukuleles have a low G string? Or does tenor just refer to the size? This ukulele has a high G string so I’m not sure if the music store put the wrong strings on it or if it’s correct… and if it is correct, can I put a low g string on it? Thanks. Any help would be appreciated

Tenor = size of uke, usually set up with high G.
You can definitely change it to a low G.

Thanks mistaken! I just wanted to be sure! Next question.. Aquila seems to be the best brand but there are so many types. Any recommendations for what type to try?

Ah, for strings, there are as many opinions as there are string options.

I like fluorcarbon. I had an aquila wound low G string and hated it. It was boomy and overpowering and just unpleasant. Switched to low G fluorcarbon and I’m in love. It’s a normal string but lower, not something that sounds and looks like it’s on the wrong instrument, like the aquila.

I also have low G fluorocarbon (Living Water) on my tenor. Those are great.

I love the Living Water strings too, and will be going back to them (currently on Worths which luthier put on my instruments).
I also have a Living Water low G set to be put onto a uke.

Thanks everyone! I think I will take your advice and try the low G fluorocarbon living water. Thanks so much! This saved me hours of research!

Now I want living waters. I’m avoiding international shipping but the selection is so stupidly limited around here. Tell us what you think of them!
