I was lucky enough to win the ‘we’ll arrange the song of your choice’ challenge a few months back. I’ve always loved Hard Times and was thrilled when Andrew asked Christopher to arrange it. I asked for a duet so my pals and I can work on it together. In the meantime, I couldn’t wait to dive in and learn it; and since I’ve also been learning to play the mandolin, I thought I’d add it to this video.

Again, many many thanks to Andrew and Christopher for this amazing arrangement!

Nice job @deadbuggy. I have been thinking about mandolin. I grew up playing violin and had heard mandolin had same strings. Thought about trying to learn long ago, even before I stumbled upon uke. After learning uke, that desire to try mandolin is back. How is it coming along for you? Are you finding some things from uke helping? I have glanced at some instruments and they are a bit exspensive. Any recommendations?

@ldarrow, I find the mandolin and the uke two entirely different beasts. The tuning is different so chord shapes are not the same. For me, it’s harder to play the mandolin — metal strings, smaller fret board and finicky to keep in tune. But I love how it sounds and it’s been rewarding to learn something new.

The other challenge is that mandolins are expensive. Most budget friendly for a good instrument is around $500 – 600 — the Kentucky line of instruments are very good, as are Eastmans.

@deadbuggy, I have been wondering what song you chose and didn’t realize it was Stephen Fosters Hard Time. Been a favorite of mine. When Christopher posted, I started learning it. So great! Thanks for the selection and beautiful playing. Of course a dream of mine would be to learn the mandolin. Love the sound!👏👏 Louisa

@deadbuggy – cool, I wondered what you choose! I missed the posting of this lesson. Just started it. Love the high and low G duet. I love the sound of mandolin. Great job combining it all together so quickly.
