    Hello,
    I’m Betsy Manning and I’ve been a strummer/singer with Uke since 2015.
I’ve been busy with a few things in life, like becoming a Licensed Massage Therapist and Reflexologist. Any brain space and time was consumed with that pursuit since February 2023. I’ve been working for 6 months now, and can now get back to working towards next level proficiency in Uke.
I’ve been trying to learn the type of playing you all teach here for many years. I do tend to get discouraged and distracted easily. I was just thinking back to my early days trying to learn Hallelujah in C. It felt so impossible. I struggled with Morning Has Beoken. WTH is a dm7?! 🤣 It took me at least a month to learn the Island Strum. Down down up Up down up… Now that’s all kindergarten to me, I’m happy to say.
So I really need to be patient with myself working on Canon in D and Spooky Scary Skeltons. I do tend ro flit around which hurts my progress.
So, with a little bit of self awareness of my issues and learning style, and a lot more determination…I’m back, and at it again.
Thank you for this marvelous site and your incredible lessons. It will take me forever to learn, but hey, it took me forever to learn island strum, and I did it back in the day.
Thank you! Someday, I’ll get in one of these contests!

Keep at it Betsy, you can do it! Try to practice that one song, SSS, every day this month, and if you need help on it, don’t hesitate to ask 🙂

@ukulelebetsy don’t get discouraged. Believe me I struggled five years ago and taught myself mostly from RC. It took a year before I entered a challenge and remember seeing others post an entry and was SO intimidated. I even asked @andrew were these people all professional? He told me to follow my path and not someone else. So stick with it, practice (as much as you can) make it fun but setting little goals – island strum was a big one for me, way back when, so already you are on your way. See you on a future challenge! Awh, thank you leb397!
Yes, one of the challenges is staying persistent. I haven’t done that before now. I know my learning disadvantages, and I’m working on them.
Andrew suggested working on Spooky Scary Skeltons for a month, and I’m following his advice. It’s slow going, but I’m getting there. Before that I’d been flitting from piece to piece, but not improving. There are so many GREAT arrangements here, and I want to do them all…all at once, and that’s just not efficacious. It’s like running in mud.

I’m a fairly confident singer / strummer performer. I just want to go beyond that and get my hand skills up, and REALLY learn how to play this amazing instrument I love.
Thanks for your words of encouragement! It’s good to get myself focused and actually have real progress!
    Cheers!

Welcome, @ukulelebetsy! This site is amazing – I discovered it earlier in the year when I found myself thinking there must be more than strumming with this instrument. And indeed there is – I had no idea there would be so many possibilities for learning and improving. Andrew and the other instructors are thorough and patient, and the community on this forum are all positive and encouraging. And don’t hesitate to post an entry – there are so many talented people here, and they all had to begin somewhere. We’ll look forward to hearing more from you!
