Hi, I was wondering how you would recommend practicing I’m Yours on the metronome. Would you put the note division into triplets and then play swung eighths?

No, I’d do 4/4 with quarter note subdivision. Start slow, like 100 BPM. Try to tap your foot along to the click and count the rhythm’s out-loud while playing.

I just don’t understand what the swung eighths mean? How do I know I’m playing it with a swing feel? Usually, I can tell that I’m on time if I don’t hear the metronome click. I set the note value to 16th notes and therefore I know exactly if I’m on time. With this piece, the swung eighth notes have me confused. Would you kindly elaborate on this? Thanks

Check out this lesson. It explains straight vs. swung rhythm from 2 points of view: analytically and as a “feel”. Go through that entire lesson and learn the exercises. After that, playing any song with a swung feel will make 100 times more sense.
