La Gitanita downstroke emphasis

About 20:55 into the La Gitanita tutorial, Andrew demonstrates an emphasis on the downstroke after the Rasgueado and I can certainly hear the difference but can’t figure out how to reproduce that sharpness / emphasis. Is that a slap technique? When I attempt to reproduce it I continue to hear all three strummed strings but his sounds like a single distinct tone….what am I missing?
