    Hey there,
Wondering if anyone can help me with the nuances of this measure ( it’s in an arrangement of Blackbird by Abe Lagrimas). I understand basic triplets but what is the little bar and dot as they apply to a triplet? Those tricky triplets!

    Thanks!

I can’t find that bar in the tab I have for Abe’s blackbird arrangement. Perhaps we have a different version. Anyway, I don’t think those are triplets. I think it’s just 1/8 1/16 and dotted 1/8 notes. Assuming that measure is in 4/4, here is the sequence: 1/4, dotted 1/8, 1/16, 1/8, 1/16, 1/8, 1/16, 1/16, 1/16.

One more question if you don’t mind. How do you know it’s not a triplet?

I’m no expert, but from what I’ve seen, triplets have a little bracket and a “3” on top. Otherwise, it’s mostly intuition. The easy way to check is to look at the time signature and count the beats. I was just guessing that that measure is in 4/4, but you can double check that.

For reference, here are some examples of triplets
