Live Stream: Monday, November 11th at 7:00pm EST (check your local time zone)
Hey guys, we are back with Live Lesson EP012! This month’s topic is: Pros & Cons of Fingerpicking with Your Thumb.
In this session, we’ll look at the pros and cons of fingerpicking with ONLY your thumb. We’ll examine musical situations where this method prevails, and others where it may fall short.
This month’s topic should stir up some great questions! So please post all you have below and I hope you guys join us for the live stream. 🙂

Reminder everyone, this is tonight.
I have to work late tonight so sadly I will miss it again, but I wanted to remind the rest of you.
I’m super curious about what Matt has to say as the thumb approach is one of the key things that differentiates him from everyone else on here. I find it harder with the thumb, but maybe because it’s not what I’m used to?
Anyway, have fun tonight. I’ll catch it later.November 11, 2019 at 6:23 pm #33547
Thanks for the reminder. I would have been late if it wasn’t for daylight savings time.November 11, 2019 at 6:25 pm #33548
My meeting was cancelled due to a snow storm. Yay! See y’all in a few.November 11, 2019 at 7:56 pm #33557
Live chat isn’t working for meNovember 11, 2019 at 7:58 pm #33558
Oh, it looks like the lesson is over, but the countdown timer says it will start in 2 minutes. I was sitting at my computer the whole time waiting for it to start. That sucks.November 11, 2019 at 8:04 pm #33561
Sorry about that Robin! Matt told me the counter was wrong right before the lesson, but I wasn’t home to fix it. I guess daylight savings time changed the setting I had set.November 11, 2019 at 8:06 pm #33562
I thought it was a bit weird, but I didn’t question it. Oh well, I’ll catch it live next time.November 11, 2019 at 8:10 pm #33563
Missed ya, robin. I think the timer was right for me though? I’m in the same time zone as Andrew.November 11, 2019 at 8:58 pm #33564
It should count down to 0 regardless of where you are. I’ll make sure to double check it’s correct a few hours before next month’s broadcast.November 13, 2019 at 11:36 am #33596becky7777Participant
This was a really excellent discussion and demo! (Thank you Matt on your playing background too.)
To kind of quote John Lowery: “Everyone’s fingers are different.”
Two points made me chuckle:
First was about Matt’s thumb nail being his strongest nail, as I look at both mine which keep breaking and my right hand thumb has about 4mm of exposed nail bed on the string side which isn’t too fun every month when it explodes.
(I should personally just suck it up and get good with a thumb pick at some point since the nail just keeps breaking before I can use it.) My thumb callus only has one sound, (currently hurts a lot too) and a thumb pick increases my overall playing volume and reach a little bit, but it has a distinct sound.
The second is just me laughing at myself.
Matt: very briefly says: “You can do this with your fingers too, but it’s harder.”
Me: thinks about what i’m trying to learn. “Of coarse it would be…”
