how do I get the tapped harmonics?

I’m practicing the allegro and I’m fine just until it comes to the tapped harmonics.. so I try doing a real one which is hard to get right every time. I can’t seem to wrap my head around the tapping method. It sounds squeaky and hushed and like nothing much when I do it. Any suggestions?
