Ex: I am going to pick a piece to work on and hope to develop more interesting strumming and picking patterns–hopefully find a concept lesson to learn to add slides.
Ap: Watch the concept course on slides and get comfortable using it on a few songs
Ev: make a few videos to chart progress and share them

    Thanks for the opportunity

For this challenge, I’m going to work on the two main categories of constructive criticism that I have repeatedly received from @Andrew – rhythm/pacing and reducing unwanted string noise.

    1. Execution:
Rhythm/Pacing – I will be working on the most recent feedback I received (July Challenge – “You are so beautiful) to “work on memorizing it and then practicing with the tab player, playing along with Matt.”

Unwanted String Noise – I will be revisiting “Yellow Submarine”, a song I did for an earlier challenge that suffers from a lot of unwanted string noise.

    2. Application:
I will perform and record these two songs again at the end of the month and upload them in my second post.

    3. Evaluation:
For comparison and to gauge improvement, I am posting my original submission videos for these two songs below:

It’s been a few months (okay, maybe years!) since I last posted here, but I’m excited to be back. A lot of big life events have kept me busy, and I started feeling guilty about not playing as much as I used to. Then that guilt turned into avoidance, and my uke has been collecting dust… but something changed over the past few days and I’ve decided to brush off the dust to get back to doing what I love 🙂

    1) Execution – I’m going to work on Blackbird, a song that has helped me through some harder times.

    2) Application – I’m practicing… well, practicing! Staying consistent, playing a little bit each day, and focusing on getting a clear and consistent sound with each note.

    3) Evaluation – Most importantly, I will make sure I’m having fun. Hopefully I’ll even post a video at the end of the month- the first time in a while! 🙂

Oh my goodness, it’s already halfway through the month. I knew from the beginning of the month what I wanted to do: “Lemon Tree” by Fools Garden. On the one hand, I like the idea of using any instrument, but on the other hand, I’m running out of time because I have too many variations in mind and not enough time or skill…

    1) Implementation – I’m working on “Lemon Tree” by Fools Garden. I’m using a few instruments that are mostly lying around on the shelf.

    2) Application – I’ll use sheet music from MuseScore ( https://musescore.com/user/19271391/scores/6565279 ). I’ll pick and choose what works for me, since I don’t have all the instruments listed in the score.

    3) Evaluation – I’ll post a video of the song at the end of the month.

I am working on “Don’t Worry” by Bob Marley.
I will try to get the riff in and sing.

Ex= playing with a metronome so I don’t speed up and also for the timing of the singing. I’m also trying to get that reggae beat on 2 & 4.
App= practicing the song for campfire 🔥 sing along at our mountain camping trip with a group this week. Playing/jammin’ helps and is so much.
I have been referencing different online ukulele teacher’s versions and going to go with one that teaches Bob’s original key (I think) of A. The riff is harder though. This version is taught by Stu Fuchs of ukulele zen (can I say that??)

    First update:

So I might be overcomplicating this memorization topic. 😅
With “You Are My Sunshine” at least, it seems like a lot of repetition is key. This is also what I’ve read on reddit. However, I am still searching for some kind of “hack”. 😅
I did notice some patterns, like that adjacent tines are easier to remember or descending/ascending numbers, and I’m now more aware of which hand is playing the melody notes.

    So here it is:

As this song is quite easy and short, I’ve tried an arrangement of “Moon River” (love this tune so much 😊). It is way longer than “You Are My Sunshine” and the version I’ve found is more intricate as well.
I hope with a lot of repetition I am able to post a video for this one too. 😊

As mentioned in my initial posting, I worked on improvising all parts (rhythm, bass, lead) of a simple chord progression borrowed from the Dire Straits song Six Blade Knife. As I’ll be on vacation starting next week for the rest of the month, this is where I am. Still a work in progress, but this has to do for now:

I’m a little late because my internet hasn’t been working properly this week but hopefully that won’t mean I can’t take part.

Execution – I’m learning to play Canon in D. It’s above my skill set, but I’m aiming to learn as much as possible before I run out of month. I plan to be able to play however much I can (hopefully/maybe all) off tabs.

Implementation – I’ll practice. . . as much as I can & as often as I can. It’s split into 8 melodies so I’ll tackle them one by one.

Evaluation – I’ll post my progress at the end of the month even if it’s incomplete &/or I’m unhappy with it. I may try to post an update video before then if it’s not too torturous to share (nobody wants to watch me taking half an hour to find the next note and then hitting the wrong one anyway 😂). So far I’m comfortable with (but not fluent in) the first few melodies.

@johanna2509 I love that! I’ve seen the little kalimba,s before but what a beautiful sound- like church bells. Oh moon river would be so pretty. Nice entry!

    @misterbones

    Hey friends!

    This is a fun challenge.
I was travelling the first half of the month and could not get to picking anything without the context of a uke in hand.

Execution: I am going to learn an Andalusian cadence.
Application: I will apply the chord progression to a version by Marco Cirillo in Bm. What is interesting about it is the different picking patterns as you progress in the tune.
Evaluation: I plan to focus on feel as a measure of success/interpretation.

@marianne oh I love that you will play that. I just watched his lesson on Andalusian cadence the other day and I recognize it from a few songs. You’ll make it sound beautiful!
