@abster, that was absolutely incredible! Holy cats! We are all in awe of your talents. Wonderful, wonderful work! Also the ending was funny! 😂

Here’s just a little snippet of my progress with the tremolo! I’ll try to post again how much I (hopefully) progress by the end of the month. I’m trying super hard to go slowly and methodically, and trying not to rush – trying to play it as fast I can while still playing very cleanly and precisely (as much as possible, lol).

@The_Bumble_Bard I love your biblically accurate ukulele ❤️ did the googly eyes affect the sound in any way?

@avicularia, haha!! Oh my, I’m pretty sure there’s only one thing you could mean by that and it’s the “biblically accurate” description of angels and some of the beings from the end times / Revelation (and Ezekiel)? 😅😂😅 Like the angels that have many eyes covering their wings and the “wheel” covered in many eyes. That’s a pretty amazing take, I don’t know how I didn’t think of that (if that is what you mean about my ukulele). 😂😅😂 There’s a lot I could say about that because it’s an interesting and strange thing (some people interpret those descriptions as strictly symbolic with no literal meaning), but it’s funny that other people have tried to illustrate what those angels would look like and it’s a little scary, honestly. Definitely not your down-to-earth, human-esque Touched By An Angel. 😂 Thank you though, Ukebert is flattered by that comparison (I’ve decided that’s my uke’s name). 😅😂

Oh sorry, went off on that tangent without answering, but I don’t *think* the googly eyes actually are affecting the sound now. I am overly emotionally attached to that uke so when I thought the sound was being muffled, I stopped adding on more eyes, but I don’t think they are an issue, actually. So occasionally I’ve gone back to adding more now. 😂 But yeah I’ve recently realized I need to start playing other ukes because if something happens to this one, it could be bad because it’s the main uke I’ve ever played. So thinking about that. 😅

    @The_Bumble_Bard That’s exactly what I meant 😀

@avicularia, ha, I’m really happy that is what you meant. 😂😅 That is genius, plain and simple. I am going to latch onto that comparison for sure. 😂

    Hi!
    Happy January!
It doesn’t come naturally to me, never has. I was introduced to playing guitar back in high school I think. I never got any good at it but I didn’t let go either. A couple of years back I bought my first Ukulele and it’t is such a fun instrument, I’ll have to get better at playing! I keep challenging myself and I am so happy that I found RC101. I am mostly self taught but I also know I need guidance, a direction and challenges. For January my goal is to learn a new piece, get better at a certain technique (thumb picking) and look less often at my fretting hand while playing.

    1) Execution: I will delve deeper into chord melody and thumb picking. I (thought I) picked an easy song, but the more I play it I realise the challenge is in the details. Building finger strength, tempo and fluidity, clean pull-offs and sweet sounding slides.

    2) Application: I will apply this to Matt Dahlbergs arrangement of Auld Lang Syne. It’s a short piece but I will put all efforts into playing it correctly and with lot’s of “feel”.

    3) Evaluation: I hope I’ll be able to play this at the end of the month despite very limited time to practice. I also hope I’ll be able to play without looking at my fretting hand ALL the time, I need to get more confident in placing my fingers correctly at the fretboard.

@the_bumble_bard thank you for concerned comments. All is better. Lots of family stuff to manage.
Nice tremolo start. Since I’m left handed, the tremolo tends to go wonky after 4 times 😕😆. Nice start. Hope you can play one of your originals!

    @misterbones
have to say you have demonstrated that the Ukulele truly can sound amazing in all genres

    Happy New Year!

Execution: I want to arrange and play The Pogues’ ‘Dirty Old Town’ “as a band”.

Application: I’ll watch a few different live recordings of the song. I’ll also watch different covers of the song for different instruments. I’ll think about what instruments and what key I’ll play.

Evaluation: I’ll record and post what I’ve got by the end of the month.

    Update 2:
I had a bad week and didn’t play much. I’m on module 5 of the Definitive Beginner’s Guide. Part 2 of The Path of the Wind is still challenging. One good thing is, I managed to produce harmonics for the first time 🙂

I am probably at the slightly-above-a-beginner level of playing. Learning chords and starting to learn finger picking melodies.

    execution:
chords and finger picking seem to present lots of long reaches followed by long reaches much farther away. so i hope to work on that.

application: learn the finger picking etude #21. i will be going through the basic course and practicing it every day

evaluation: stay tuned for a recording of my playing. hopefully it will be in a steady time and not too horrible!!!!

Boy this is difficult! I’m managing 10 mins practice most days, but any longer in one session is a struggle.

I can do the first downstroke and hit any string while resting my thumb on the G string. Yeah!

When i try to add the second down strum it all goes wrong.

Then when i do the thumb pluck it either doesn’t sound at all or my index decides to do an up-pluck on first string.

Also, keeping the wrist loose needs concentration.

    1. Execution-for the month of January I have been working on ideas for a new ukulele composition. I have been recording ideas as I’ve practiced the past few weeks. So far I have recorded two original compositions for previous challenges.

    2. Application-take these ideas and work them into my 3rd ukulele composition. Explore a variety of finger picking and strumming patterns.

    3. Evaluation-complete, title, and record the composition.

    David,

You’re well on your way and you’re obviously putting in the good work! 10 minutes a day is perfect. The big thing is that in your video you get it right a few times and that is proof that you can execute it. It’s now just a matter of making it consistent. In those ten minutes a day break up your practice (ten minutes on one thing is a lot!).

Start with just down strokes for 30 seconds or so
Then add the bum-ditty rhythm with the second down stroke and thumb for 30 seconds.
    Rinse and repeat.

This will keep resetting you to that basic down stroke and feeling the beat which is the most important thing.

The other thing is take breaks every couple minutes. Take your hand off the instrument and relax. We all tend to carry a lot of tension in our hands when we’re learning a new technique and it’s important to take the hands off the instrument and just shake them out from time to time.

    Cheers!
    Christopher.

    Hi Christopher,

Thanks for looking at my progress. Your comments are excellent and made today’s practice go much better. I’ll stick to that routine now!

    Thanks
    David
