Strumming Etude #2 / May I up strum by index finger?

I am eager to follow your lesson plan.
Before getting this basic course, I had used index finger to up strum.
But Andrew remommand to use thum finger to upstrum. and show me fantastic thum upstrum.
I practice the style very hard.
But the video ‘Strumming etude #2’ in the first part a player doesn’t upstrum by thumb finger but index finger. I am confused which is better for me.

Really comes down to personal preference. Try both, and as you continue playing you’ll see advantages for using one over the other.
