Tremolo

In the beginner’s lessons, module 3, unit 5 you describe how to produce a tremolo sound by moving the finger in an up-down motion. I’m not clear from watching the video on what is meant.
Is it a vertical movement—press on the string then release it?
or is it a movement that moves on the string between frets?
or is it a movement forcing the string from side to side?
