    I get these weird harmonics/dead strings when picking down because the flesh of my finger touches the string after my nail. Does anyone have any tips that would keep this to a minimum?

    Interesting, because that’s what’s required to produce pinch harmonics on guitar. A very 80’s technique, a la Zakk Wylde. It’s hard for me to offer any advice without being able to see your playing. Feel free to post a video and I’ll be happy to see if I can help 🙂
