And Happy New Year to all of you wonderful people!
I wasn’t ready to prepare my own tune for the previous free challenges, so decided this is the time to do it.
Application: Choose a tune from the several little snippets I’ve recorded when something has come to me; decide which key is best for ukulele.
Execution: Develop a song from that tune; add chords and fingerstyle picking to go with it; note it all down on paper; work to bring it up to speed.
Evaluation: Record myself playing it every Friday until I’m ready to submit it on the forum.

Here’s my take on Greensleeves, tarted up a bit. Best wishes for the holidays to everyone.
I meant to add that my third primary goal, to push myself, is to learn to play Marianne’s “Contemplations” well enough to play smoothly. The festival is the extra incentive.
Thanks for this, Matt – it prompted me to write down my goals for this year instead of just thinking about them (rather loosely!):
– Share what I’ve learned about fingerpicking through Rockclass101 with a sub-group of HUGS, the local strumming group, through monthly meetups. I’ll develop a learning/practice outline for players with minimal fingerpicking experience, and they can set the pace.
– Keep Beatrice, my lovely Low G, out where I can pick her up throughout the day and play for five or ten minutes at a time. (I was concerned about the humidity in our living area, but during the winter, with a woodstove keeping the room warm, the humidity is just perfect.)
– Attend the ukulele festival in Vancouver that Matt mentioned, and take part in one of his classes/workshops.
Matt, when is the festival? And will you be teaching?

Here’s my go at Fingerpicking Etude No 28. I still need to work the kinks out and somehow get comfortable with that last finger salad of a chord (love that expression, Andrew!), but I’ll keep working on it. Thanks for another good challenge.
Oh @Marianne, you played your intense sadness into those pieces. I hope her family can hear this tribute. Thank you.
@The_Bumble_Bard: I didn’t get a chance to tell you how impressed I was with your performance, given that you worked on it for less than a day. To your 25/75 Success/Stress levels, add 100% for your courage in playing it for us! I’ll look forward to hearing your November piece.
@gi_gi_: Welcome back! I had two weeks away from playing in October, and I wondered if my fingers might have forgotten what to do – fortunately, their collective memory seems better than my own, and it didn’t take long for them to limber up again.
@nat-uke: I just listened to Evan playing Malagueña – oh, that’s something to aspire to! In the meantime, I’ll be happy to make it through Etude 28 all in once piece.Thanks, @Andrew – I do want to smooth that one out, but it’s probably going to take more than a couple of practice sessions!

I watched Black Sabbath’s 1970 video of Iron Man, with a young, fresh-faced Ozzy Osbourne, well before his bird-decapitating and crazy-makeup days, belting out some pretty heavy lyrics (guess that’s why they called it Heavy Metal, eh?). What creativity, playing with a simple riff and taking it to so many new places! My rendition, on the other hand, was still a struggle (don’t want to use two missed weeks as an excuse, but it didn’t help), but it’s the best I can do for now. As always seems to happen, I got some canine percussion in the background – serves as a good distraction to play over.
