This is my entry to February’s challenge.
First, thank you @Andrew, for your advice on playing the Dm, I think I would have injured myself trying Matt’s finger stretching technique.I still need a bit of work, but I wanted to get this in early this week. Biggest issue in this recording is I missed the chucks in the chorus. I do have another recording where I add in the chucks, but my timing is all over the place, so this is the better recording.
February 3, 2024 at 6:21 pm #60539jedartParticipantI decided on “Come As You Are”, but I’m in Dm hell, and I have fairly long fingers. Any advice for getting that 2 finger Dm down?
January 29, 2024 at 3:47 pm #60403jedartParticipant@gi_gi_ thank you for your encouragement. Like most people, I don’t like the sound of my voice in a recording.
January 27, 2024 at 3:49 pm #60373jedartParticipantThis is likely my last updated for the month. Here is my latest practice for my second goal in this challenge, Purple Haze intro riff. Still needs a lot of attention in the last 4 measures.
January 21, 2024 at 8:02 pm #60300jedartParticipantGoals progress Jan 20.
Playing Summertime from memory, one goal met.
Purple Haze riff? well that needs a tiny bit more work. I’m trying a “interleaved” practice routine where I work on parts from different songs in the same practice session. In my practice, I’ll now be interleaving “Stranger Things” with “Purple Haze”. I didn’t want to include that in this challenge, as that arrangement was already a monthly challenge from a few years ago.January 12, 2024 at 11:09 pm #60222jedartParticipantHere is a video of my practicing the second goal of my January challenge, the intro riff to Purple Haze.

I have the same issue with my little finger. I bought some hand exercise tools from D’Addario a couple of months ago. One is a finger squeeze thing for grip strength (good for improving Barr chords), the other is little triangle fidget thing that is supposed to improve dexterity, and I’m happy to report it seems to actually work.January 7, 2024 at 11:56 pm #60158jedartParticipantMy practice so far:
I should explain I am using this challenge to experiment with a new practice format, short intervals (3 minutes right now) covering 4 to 5 different segments of music. I’m only posting “Summertime”, and “Purple Haze”. My goal with “Summertime” is to memorize the entire song, play and sing in time, “Purple Haze” I just want to play the intro smoothly (chords for Purple Haze are relatively easy, so if I get the intro down I should be able to play the whole song).
January 7, 2024 at 7:39 pm #60162jedartParticipantI tried to post my progress videos, but they are not showing up? The forum says they were posted successfully.
January 5, 2024 at 11:34 pm #60143jedartParticipant1) Execution – I have a couple of goals in mind ( I trying out a new practice routine I learned about recently that I will be employing) First, I want to get comfortable with the metronome, I’ll be working with an arrangement of “Summertime” with the metronome. Second, I’ll be working on the intro riff to “Purple Haze”.
2) Application – For the metronome part, I hope to play through the song, with vocals, in time. For “Purple Haze”, I just want to get fluent with that riff and perhaps perform the whole song with vocals.
3) Evaluation – I did record myself trying to play “Summertime” with the metronome, I won’t be posting that publicly though 😛

Ah yes, my old nemesis, the metronome. Is there anything special I can do in my metronome app setup to play to a swing rhythm?December 16, 2023 at 4:47 pm #59857jedartParticipantPremium Member.
This is one of my favorite Holiday tunes, and Matt’s arrangement is so cool I had to work with this one. Here is my submission, I still don’t have the last two measures down and I need to work on the dynamics. I hope by the time my family meets for the Holiday, I’ll own this song.
November 27, 2023 at 9:06 pm #59541jedartParticipant@Andrew – Thanks Andrew, it’s still a work in progress. I started videoing my practice even when using the tab scroller. That was the best take so far, but I’ve added that piece to my “meditative etudes” to keep it in my practice sessions.

I wanted to get this entered before my holiday starts, I’m still struggling with timing and some of the transitions.
