I am a reformed guitar player. I started out playing hard rock, played in a punk band then stopped. I picked it up again years later and dedicated myself to the ragtime stylings of the Reverend Gary Davis, but developed nerve issues and it becain painful reaching over the bout of my jumbo acoustic.

I found a used Favilla soprano in an antique shop, took it to a uke maker, Ukemaker Mike, who had a uke group meet in his shop once a week. Ukemaker Mike is Michael Dasilva, a world class maker. I did not no this at the time. I ended up stopping and not playing anything for a while. But then… I Started playing the uke again, but after a while, realized that strumming is for accompaniment, I’m no singer.

Looking on the inter webs I stumbled upon classical music played on a uke. Then I found Rockclass 101, and I am happier than I have ever been playing an instrument. I’m split between high and low G, but 1.5 inch nut is important to me. I love finger picking, do not care for “chunking” and can’t wait to see what’s coming down the line. Bach n roll!

Thank you to all of you for this segment as this is the most vexing issue I have regarding the ukulele, that is making the video. I just encountered the same issue on a YouTube chat happening today. The thing that bothers me the most is that my apparently monstrous ego is intent on denying me one of the great benefits of this site which is teacher access.

I admit, I sure would have liked to enter the give away this time, but maybe another time. In the mean time I will take the suggestion of practicing filming clips. And maybe pretend I’m sending it to someone for fun. Which it is supposed to be.

You can try different strings, that can make a difference, you might also check with a dealer to see if the saddle can be lowered.

If it hasn’t been requested, I’d love to learn Stardust. I don’t even know why I’m putting that out there now considering I expect I’ll be busy for a couple years learning what is already here, the classical arrangements and Andrew’s Etudes being my favorites so far, but there it is.

I stumbled across a YouTube video of a woman named Brittni Paiva using a thumb pick. (No good reason not to try it!)

I’m in the Bay Area, so Kala is kind of the house brand around here, but I started with one of their solid spruce tops at about the price points you are talking about, and I’m quite happy, for what that is worth. Good luck with the search!

I joined two weeks ago after dancing around the site for about a month. I kept seeing posts, from it, but, somehow I managed to see Andrew in a video about learning the ukulele, and everything he stated was my experience, ie chord charts without rhythmic notation. The more I looked at this, the more sense it made, and, after hovering over the “join” button, I finally (and correctly!) hit the yes. It was the best choice I could have made. I’ve skipped a couple things until I have something with a low g, and dodged Ode to Joy only because my son learned it on recorder, then discovered he could play it with two recorders. With his nose.

My humble beginnings are George Harrison and his version of Devil in the Deep Blue Sea and Queen’s Good Company. Then I found this site, now all bets are off. I learned the Harrison song at Michael DaSilva’s studio years ago. I looked him up to see if it was ongoing, then I saw the custom James Hill tenor he makes, looked up James Hill and realized there was a lot to learn. Now I’m on this crazy Fibonacci spiral and all I see is growth! And now, you all have introduced me to a ton of homework.
