AndrewKeymaster@jody_hendrickson – You’re getting there! Sounded spot on on the last take. Keep up the great work!
@maryjanew – Sounding good, MJ! Try looping those phrases in the tab player. That’s a good way to practice it 🙂
@morrieuke1 – Very pretty! Can’t wait to hear it all!
@The_Bumble_Bard – I really like the contrasting tonalities between both themes. Very beautifully written, Rachael.
@abster – Another beautiful performance, Abhay! The rest of my feedback is for your parents: This might be the most challenging tune he’s played. And it was very impressive! I do have some suggestions: Could you try having him play along with Evan in the tab player? Ask him to try to match Evan’s playing as best he can. Start with timing as the focal point. And only 8 bars at a time. When he can nail 1 – 8, try 9 – 16, then 1 – 16. Build the song that way. After that, he can work on the more subtle aspects of playing. Like matching the accent on beat 1 in bar 67.
@mysticrick – Very well played Rick! I do have a couple suggestions. First, I noticed sometimes you pull down or up on the string that you are fretting. For ex, ring finger at 1:26 or middle finger at 1:37. This causes the note to go sharp as it bends the string. Try to keep the strings as straight as possible. The first time, when the song goes to Melody B, you switched to a thumb picking approach. This change slowed you down a little. I’d keep the regular picking approach when that section comes up, just like you did the second time it went to Melody B.
Overall, excellent job! A great first post 🙂

The_Bumble_BardParticipant@Andrew, thank you so much! That really means a lot that you say that and is very encouraging. Hopefully I can get another take playing it a bit better. 😅
I like the phrase, “contrasting tonalities” for some reason. 😅

AndrewKeymaster@malku2603 – Beautiful! Nicely played 🙂

ParticipantThis is my first update after two weeks of practice. Still working on that chuck. My fingers seem to catch in the strings.

AndrewKeymaster@leslieb – Sounding really good, Leslie! Feel is spot on!
If you’re coming down with a claw/closed hand shape for the chuck, you’ll want to pluck the strings instead of doing an up strum. That is the method I prefer and taught in this lesson.
On the contrast, if you want to follow the chuck with an up strum, you’ll want to use Matt’s method which has you coming down with an open hand shape for the chuck.
This video shows the difference between the two:

wannabgoodParticipantHere’s my first take of Rhythmic Blues. Please excuse the poor quality. I practice early in the morning, usually in low light. I took the video on a whim, and thought it good enough to show some progress. My goal for the challenge was to color outside the lines a little…play by feel rather than strictly adhere to the score. To facilitate this, I watched and read the lesson for a day or two…enough to get the gist, but then improvised a bit. One big change is that the song was designed for low-g and I’m playing it on a high-G. I recently bought a second ukulele that I’ll string low-g, but for now I’ll go with this as I think the piece sounds fine with either setup.

mark1256ParticipantYes, I know I am late. I was going to take a month off. Then a friend gave me the music/tab for a song that I had never heard before. At first I ignored it. It wasn’t something that I would normally listen to. Then I decided to try something different for me. The song is Ashokan Farewell by Jay Unger. It was written for the Civil War documentary and it’s a fiddle song.
I started by listening to several versions of the recording to get the melody in my head. I actually found more than 20 recordings.1. My goal is to modify the tab to fit my preference from some of the recordings.
2. Memorize the song. Something that I have great difficulty doing. Especially for a song without words.
3. Work on timing and tone. This is a slow song and often struggle with playing clear notes. My plan is to practice it at least 30 minutes a day. First working on tone and then memorizing the tab.

leb397Participant@mark1256 one of my favorite songs. I’m sure you found version by Sawlon on the Uke. He has tabs too. Can’t wait to hear your version

morrieuke1Participant@the_bumble_bard thanks, your winter tune was very peaceful, and actually kind of similar to my song in some ways-nicely done!
Thanks @Andrew, after 3 drafts, and many edits and erased measures, I have come up with the final version of Heavenly Light! Now to practice and record. Attached is the notation. I hand wrote it since I had trouble getting the tabs in Finale to be correct frets. My version of finale is a bit older, maybe that’s it. Anyway, here it is and I will work on practicing and recording it.January 18, 2024 at 5:35 pm #60265
absterParticipant@andrew: thanks so much for your feedback. Abhay has started to follow your suggestions. I will try and record him again in a few weeks. Thanks again.

The_Bumble_BardParticipant@morrieuke1, ha that is pretty funny especially considering my orig is based on a randomly generated chord progression that I posted at the beginning of the month. 😅😂 I think that we both chose (or me randomly chose) G minor for the minor parts of the songs. Mine is more fingerpicky and flowy and yours more strummy and embellishmenty. And I think we have similar formats, but yours goes major, minor, major from what I understand (and mine the opposite)? Just some fun comparing and contrasting. Yours sounds very lovely, look forward to hearing the whole thing! 😊
@wannabgood, that was so good! You really had such a great feel to that. I love it! 😁-

AndrewKeymaster@wannabgood – Bravo, Michael! Excellent feel and performance 👏
@morrieuke1 – You should pick up a copy of Guitar Pro. I never used Finale as it has a reputation of being non-intuitive to use. I did use Sibelius for years. I liked that one, but GP is so easy to use 🙂
@abster – My pleasure!January 18, 2024 at 6:31 pm #60269rgillof
ParticipantHere are a few measures of Misirlou, which demonstrates the trouble I am having with the tremolo technique using the thumb nail. Although I have been practicing this for quite a while (long before this month), I cannot eliminate the clicking sound I get, as is evident in this video. Matt does address this clicking problem in the Live Lesson on How to Tremolo Pick on Ukulele, but I still can’t eliminate the click. I believe the thumb nail is plenty long enough. Any ideas? Thanks.
