My entry for the December challenge π
I’ve started using a metronome recently and I still find it a bit difficult, so I’m interested what you’re going to say about my timing in this video π

February 28, 2019 at 1:02 pm #25418awiealissaParticipantHi everybody!
This is my entry for the February Challenge. I would call myself an intermediate/advanced player when it comes to fingerstyle, but I never really learned to read standard notation. This is where I’m a complete beginner. I used to play a little piano, but I also copied everything from Youtube videos or I wrote the individual note names above the notes when I played with sheet music.
So in this challenge I was mainly interested in being able to read the notes and play at the same time. That’s why I didn’t practice the song so often, but rather the notes themselves, so that I don’t just play the song by heart, but really read the standard notation π
I think it went quite well!Alissa

February 9, 2019 at 12:59 pm #24968awiealissaParticipantHey Andrew, thanks for your feedback. I actually don’t really know how to work on being more relaxed! I already knew the arrangement by heart. Maybe it was, because this arrangement was very difficult for me in general. I could try being more relaxed with the songs for the february challenge maybe by practising much more. But I’m not sure if that will work :/
January 31, 2019 at 10:22 am #24800awiealissaParticipantHey guys,
I achieved my goals this month, even though my exams are keeping me very busy!
I finished my fingerstyle arrangement of This is me from The Greatest Showman, which was very difficult for me and it took me almost the whole month, but I’m very happy with the result. Unfortunately I didn’t manage to record it with my microphone yet and make a “real” cover out of it (that’s coming in the next few days), but I shared my progress on Instagram. Here’s the first part and you can also find the chorus on my page:

I also took the Standard notation course up to the point I planned. So I achieved that, too, and I can record my entry for the February challenge soon π
January 18, 2019 at 4:00 am #23594awiealissaParticipantHere’s my first UPDATE π In a nutshell: The goals I set for this month are to practice half an hour every day, to arrange This is me from The Greatest Showman and to do the Standard notation course.
Unfortunately, I could not keep practicing for half an hour every day. When I have university, I have to leave very early and come home late. After everything is done at home, too, I’m usually too tired to play the ukulele. Therefore, I decided to practice on the days when I don’t have to go to uni.
My own arrangement is difficult for me this time, too. All I’ve almost finished so far is the beginning and the chorus, but all in all, I’m satisfied with my progress. It’s a pretty difficult song. Here you can see the first sneak peek on my Instagram:

I’m also thinking about posting more on Instagram about my progress and arranging and stuff like that. I think that could also motivate me to practice a lot and could be helpful for others too.
With the standard notation course it also works well. I’ve already done a lot of it, but I definitely have to go through the first lessons again.
January 12, 2019 at 12:04 pm #22768awiealissaParticipantHey, thanks a lot!
I had one year of guitar lessons and taught myself fingerstyle on the guitar after that (but I couldn’t play many songs). In summer 2016 I got my first ukulele and then learned mostly by watching covers and copying. So I didn’t start directly with Rock Class 101! But it definitely helps me improve my playing. I’ve been taking part in the monthly challenges for a long time now and this often makes me try out more difficult songs. And I can really recommend these challenges to you, you don’t have to be a premium member to participate and there’s always a beginner song too.
So yeah, Rock Class 101 adds a lot to my progress, I wish I’d found it earlier. I haven’t gone through all of the lessons yet, but most of them and I’m currently doing the “Standard Notation” course, which is something I’ve always wanted to learn.
And I’d say it took me about 3 years plus a some prior knowledge on the guitar to get to this level of playing.
I hope those information helped you π- This reply was modified 5 years, 3 months ago by awiealissa.
January 11, 2019 at 11:40 am #22665awiealissaParticipantThank you very much for your feedback, Andrew! I’m glad you liked it π π
It definitely makes sense, and I will work on being more relaxed with my playing!January 4, 2019 at 4:01 pm #22071awiealissaParticipantHey everybody!
My goal for this month is to make my own arrangement for This is me from The Greatest Showman. I love this song, but it’s not that easy to arrange on the ukulele and so far, I’ve always given up quickly.
Also, I’ll try to complete the new “Reading Standard Notation” course at least until Unit 12. One of my New Year’s Resolutions is to learn to read notes and I often have problems with timing. I hope the course will help me improve.I’d say I’m intermediate/advanced level.
I’ll try to achieve this goal by practicing at least half an hour every day and by completing at least one unit of the course a day.
I’m going to record my progress or write about it weekly!

Unfortunately I haven’t noticed that my video goes over a minute and thus about 10 seconds are now missing in my Instagram Post π So I uploaded the whole audio file on soundcloud just to be safe π
Merry Christmas everyone π
November 22, 2018 at 6:44 am #20314awiealissaParticipantThank you, Andrew π I practiced a lot more and left out a note that was very difficult for me and didn’t sound nice either. I’m much happier with it now! π
November 20, 2018 at 2:44 am #20253awiealissaParticipantThank you for your answers! I’m glad you enjoyed it π
Shortening the intro would be difficult, but I could leave it out completely and just start with the strumming. The song is long enough π But then I wouldn’t have the harmonics anymore and I’m really proud of them! So I’ll have to think about it. And yes, I also noticed that it is a bit higher in the original. I already play in the 12th fret, I think I just leave it that way. I think it’s gonna be too difficult otherwise. Oh, and I didn’t know the phrase “peanut gallery” yet (English is not my mother tongue), haha, but thanks, I learned something new again π
Thanks again!

This is my entry for the october challenge. I tried Etude No. 15 and I practiced it almost every day of this month. It was pretty difficult, but I’m kind of happy with the result.
Here’s the Soundcloud link:
I also posted it on Instagram, if you’re interested in the video. I hope it’s okay if I share both links.
