leb397ParticipantHere is my Summertime Swing entry. I can honestly say I enjoyed learning this mini lesson ALOT. @Andrew I’m thrilled you put these M.L. together and write them with a fun aspect as well as wonderful lesson. @Matt, you taught me how to do slides higher up the neck, a real challenge moving around the frets. Although I will never be happy with my entry (worst critic) this was my best (OF MANY) takes. Louisa
Good Luck everyone! P.S. only had time to learn one of the Sept. lessons but love the Blues Rock.

The_Bumble_BardParticipant@karenj, your take on Summer Nights was lovely! The struggle with that one is real for sure, but you did so great with it. ππ
@leb397, that was very lovely! Summertime Swing is such a happy tune and you captured the spirit of it for sure! πEveryone else has done such a great job as well!
I forgot to say, @Andrew, could you please remove me from the prize drawing this month? Thank ye! π

AndrewKeymaster@leslieb – That was awesome Leslie! You nailed the fun, feel good vibes! Techniques look great! My suggestion, as you continue to practice, would be to play along with the tab player in “synthetic” mode with the metronome activated. That’ll help reinforce good timing and eliminate any hesitation when transitioning bar to bar.
Start with 2 bars at a time, then add the next 2, then go back and do it all. So for ex. 1-2, then 3-4, then 1-4. Then: 5-6, 7-8, 5-8. And finally 1-8. Watch out for the hammer-ons. I want to hear a little more swing in those.
@nat-uke – Excellent playing, timing and feel Natalie! Well done! Picado technique looks great too! Try resting your thumb on the top string (G) for the B melody section. That helps to add stability to the right hand over floating.
@karenj – Excellent playing, Karen! Your uke has a perfect tone for this tune πMy only suggestion would be to continue practicing the strumming sections at slower tempo and focus on getting the chords to ring crystal clear. I think the opening strum section is equally as challenging as the crazy movement in bar 8, b/c in bar 3, you have to mute or miss the A string when strumming. Very tricky!
@bibilele – Way to go Bianca! Electric sounds great! Picking technique was excellent too. Only thing I’d say is if you have any tension in your picking hand to try to relax as much as possible.
@leb397 – Very well played Lousia! Fingerpicking, strumming and overall feel/vibe was excellent! I think a little more practice at a slower tempo would help clean up some of the very minor stuff. But overall, it was awesome and TY for the kind words!
@The_Bumble_Bard – Got it πSeptember 29, 2023 at 11:23 am #58856
nat-ukeParticipant@andrew thanks for the feedback and tip on the G string/thumb in B section ππππ

richo_ukeParticipantHello Andrew and everybody else reading and watching,
this month I went with Blues Rock Riff β Mini Lesson: 012, which really was fun to play though you won’t recognize any fun in my face whilst playing. π
I am always too concentrated – then I make really a lot of mistakes and they make me nervous and so on.Nevertheless it was fun and one day I will be smiling and playing with ease. Perhaps next year. π
Have a great time everybody and many thanks to you, Andrew and your team. I really love these challenges.

bibileleParticipantThanks a lot, @Andrew! You really got me – after playing the song a few times, I need to shake out my picking hand. I will try to relax more. Thanks a lot for the video! π

potterParticipantHello from soggy Brooklyn!
Thank you Andrew for another great challenge. I started the month thinking: No way I’m gonna be able to play that! And then, at the end of the month, in huge part to the great tips from you on this forum and wonderful instruction by Matt, I end the month thinking: Well, that turned out better than expected!
I’m looking forward to seeing what you have in store for us next month.
Be well, Jen
Edit: forgot to mention that this is the Double Stop || Mini Lesson: 013 at 80%.

coffeemugParticipantHi!
Tried my hand(s) with the minor blues jam. Tricky, but fun!

AndrewKeymaster@richo_uke – That rocked Rici! Picking technique and timing were excellent. Very well played!
@potter – That was awesome, Jen! Playing sounded great! 2 thoughts: If you’re playing along with the tab player, try it on your own. Sometimes we can rely too much on having a guide to follow.Second, continue to increase tempo, gradually. Excellent job this month!
@coffeemug – Excellent blues jam, Mary! My only suggestion would be to work on the chord transitions (meaning, for ex: going from i to iv) so that the tempo stays steady throughout. Try practicing with a metronome a little slower while focusing on that.September 29, 2023 at 5:11 pm #58863
coffeemugParticipantWill do! Thanks, Andrew.

ParticipantMuch later than usual, but kind of busy month for me, so just got around to finally learning and recording my contribution for the September 2023 challenge. How convenient the theme was mini lessons this month. My very first participation was in October 2020, and I haven’t missed one entry since, so this completes a three year streak, definitely didn’t want to miss this one. While anything with the word “syncopation” in it usually makes me nervous, this one felt almost like cheating, as the guitar plays the exact same thing, and it felt quite easy to just follow that lead. Plus the riff is super-catchy, which helps as well. As Andrew always points out – if you can sing it, you can play it. Definitely the case here.
(Please no giveaway entry for me this month – thanks!)September 29, 2023 at 9:12 pm #58865rgillof
ParticipantHere is my attempt at Minor Blues Jam. I just know I could get it down, say within another month! Ha! But, I will keep working at it with any and all feedback. Thanks.

AndrewKeymaster@misterbones – Excellent in the pocket playing, Michael! π
And a big congrats on 3 years of challenges! It’s been an honor to get to watch you grow as a musician! π
@rgillof – Great playing, Richard! The one thing I’d suggest working on is lightening your right hand attack when fingerpicking and strumming. This is a concept I demo-d and explained in this video a few years back for another member who was learning this song. You can ignore the comments on the left hand in that video.Try practicing with a lighter touch on this song or this song. If you learn it, feel free to post a video on the forum or email me one. I’d be happy to follow up with you on this π

nelsonlin2021ParticipantEnjoyed the learning the Blues Rock Riff. Appreciate any feedback.

morrieuke1ParticipantSummer Nights, not by John Travolta or Van Halen-even better-written for ukulele by Andrew Hardel! Happy vibes in this mini song, which in my opinion would be worthy of expansion. Tricky middle measures in this one, thanks for teaching Matt.
