Great job on both songs Sam! My only suggestion for you, is to go back on Aura Lee and practice either with a metronome or with the on-screen tab viewer to tighten up on the timing a little bit. You can also tap along and count while you play, that’s a great way to work on timing too. Awesome job overall, love seeing you guys participate every month 🙂
Wow, you got that down fast Chip! I think we got it right, this was a great one for you to work on. My advice for you is similar to the advice I left for Sam above. First, if we compare how you played the riff versus the chords, your timing on the chords was great. The riff was a little jerky, and this comes down to it being harder to play than the chord section. So I would suggest to break it down and just work on bar 1 and 2, loop that and play along to a metronome or the tab viewer. Then work on bar 3 and 4 in the same manner, then try to tackle the entire riff. Let me know how it goes, but you did very well on this. Keep up the good work!
Hi Lisa, I think you meant the 4th string. It’s a little awkward at first to get this playing approach down. It sounds like you just need to work on the grip adjustment, which takes time. It’s similar to when you first learn how to fret chords, it takes a while to get the muscle memory down, learning how much strength do you need to apply to make the note(s) ring out, and how to position the fingers so they do not block other strings, etc. Keep at it and let me know how it goes.

Here is my entry for the July challenge. I am only entering for the fun of it, not to be entered in the draw. I am content with one ukulele.
Regards,
Vida Fenton

July 18, 2017 at 10:03 pm #12862AndrewKeymasterThat was fantastic Vida! You must be practicing a bit, I can definitely tell you’re improving 🙂
Way to knock it out of the park MT! Keep up the great work!
July 19, 2017 at 3:50 am #12864andracassParticipantThank you, Andrew! In fact it seems to me that the notes are too severed between them…

July 19, 2017 at 10:44 am #12866AndrewKeymasterYou’re playing sounds great Fedor, but don’t forget to tune your uke before recording 😉
July 20, 2017 at 1:02 pm #12894annapukanalaMemberHello,
I’m having some difficulty with the strumming. It doesn’t sound the same as you do it Andrew. Can you please provide me this some pointers?
I’d really like to enter the challenge this week. 🙂

July 20, 2017 at 4:46 pm #12902AndrewKeymasterHi Anna, thanks for posting the video. So there’s a few things we need to work on. First, make sure you tune your ukulele before playing. When you are fretting a note (regardless of it being a single note or in a chord), you never want to pull the string down. The string should always remain perfectly straight. If you pull it down, it will cause the note to go sharp.
I would also recommend to lighten up your strum attack. Check out this lesson from our Beginner’s Course and Skip to 8:20 in the video lesson. Notice how when I strum down with my index finger, I have a very light touch. This produces a sweet and pleasing tone.
Give these suggestions a shot and let me know how it goes 🙂
July 20, 2017 at 9:03 pm #12905leggoles101ParticipantHi Andrew,
I’m very much the beginner and found both the playing and recording challenging. As I’m heading overseas for a 3 week break, flight is tonight, I thought I best submit now. I enjoyed doing this project very much and have picked up many skills.
Thank you- This reply was modified 6 years, 9 months ago by leggoles101.

July 21, 2017 at 1:45 am #12910cornishdptParticipantHere is my attempt at the July challenge. Was a little trickier than I thought to switch back to finger picking after the strumming. Sry about the ending, I couldn’t help myself.
July 21, 2017 at 1:49 am #12911cornishdptParticipantI decided to learn both songs this month since I brought my waterman with me to the beach while on I had a weeks vacation. Here is aura lee.
July 21, 2017 at 6:09 pm #12921ed_sandersonParticipantHere is my Aura Lee. It was nice to have a beginner’s song to work on, except that I was less dedicated to practicing it.
