ParticipantHello uke friends! 😊
I guess it didn’t take too long to record this finally, but I felt really nervous this time. It’s kind of like what Matt said in the most recent live lesson about performance anxiety: It never really goes away. I do think there are times when it is better, or less intense, but if you have it, it’s always kind of there. Also, it’s best not to fight the “anxiety monkeys,” but instead learn to accept them. That’s an ongoing challenge. 😊
So yeah, here it is: Peanut Butter Jeff’s Melancholy Slide Whistle. 😂😂 I’m probably most proud of that title, lol.
I recorded just the performance by itself (with dramatic stank faces when I messed up, lol):
And also a slightly longer explanation of some of my thought process behind it, since some people seemed to like that last time and I do enjoy doing it (despite my nerves). I’ll post that right after this post, though, so hopefully the forum won’t reject it (or rather the Drewmpa Loompas won’t snatch it up because they’re quick ‘n’ spry little fellers!) 😂 Thank you, @Andrew, for this challenge again! 😊

ParticipantHere is the “beforemance”:
I watched this back and realized how dang tired I still looked. 😂 I also woke up with a migraine this morning sadly, so I was just getting over that a bit. But I actually think my performance was better in this video than the previous one. I hope you enjoy these! 😂
Oh, sorry, just one more thing. I accidentally fingerpicked the third run through the pattern. The whole thing was meant to be the clawhammer technique, but I accidentally fingerpicked it. Whoopsies. Thank you again! 😊

Participant@rebecca and @misterbones very inspiring and catchy. Really enjoyed and so many others. @marianne I may have said before how beautiful your entry was and nice that Andrew featured it.
@the_bumble_bard you continue to amaze me with your creative nature. I so enjoy claw hammer and you explained your process which was fun to watch. I love that you DO feel comfortable to post how you feel. You must know that it only helps US because we are going through the same thing. Nicely done!
So many others too @gi_gi_ and @bibilele and @nat-uke. Just impressed with the originals. So I will be posting soon I hope. I’m concerned it doesn’t quite mean the criteria but I’ll have to see what Andrew says…
This site really does R O C K… Louisa-

Participant@leb397, thank you so much, my friend!! I can’t say how much I appreciate your encouragement. 😊💕 You always write such nice posts for everyone. I’m so happy you enjoy the clawhammer; it’s obviously one of my favorite ways to play uke. 😅 I feel like the songs from here and Matt’s YouTube channel that I “turned into” clawhammer sound better in some ways because they already have such a great musical infrastructure, but I’m pretty happy with that one. And I’m so glad you liked what I shared in the video about the nervousness and my thought process behind this orig. I almost didn’t share that first part, but did think maybe that could be helpful in some way; it’s also helpful for me to express my thoughts that way. I do like it once I get through the initial nerves; I really like trying to explain my odd reasoning when I try to create something. 😂 Thank you again so much! Agreed, absolutely mind-blowingly great entries in this challenge so far. Really looking forward to what you share! 😊

Participant@the_bumble_bard I loved it! It was so good.love the slides and the melancholy feel to it. The PBJ name is awesome. How did you come up with the title? I figured the Jeff came from the J in PBJ but it’s a guess 😂 Do tell…
@leb397 Thanks so much. My little song doesn’t belong here with all the awesosme ones so don’t be afraid to post. We’re all having fun.Has anyone heard from @emiliano? Does he know he won the baritone? Haven’t heard from him.

Participant@leb397: Thank you so much! Everyone here is waiting for your submission. Me too! 🙂
@The_Bumble_Bard: Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I like your “soft” clawhammer. That technique fits really well with your beautiful composition. I remerber it easily and I can imagine myself whistling the melody while walking through beautiful landscapes. That’s the bucolic image that comes to my mind. 🙂July 22, 2024 at 1:38 pm #62483gi_gi_
Participant@marianne Would you be so kind to share how you record your songs? Are you using a mic that’s connected to a mixer that goes to a DAW?
July 22, 2024 at 2:27 pm #62484marianne
Participant@gi_gi_, I actually just use my iPhone!! The built-in mic is not bad. I will then bring it into iMovie/garageband to crop it/edit it if need be.

Participant@gi_gi_ haha!!! Get ready. I think I’m going to share an explanation of the title in separate thread because it’s so ridiculously elaborate now. 😂😅😂 Thank you so much for your kind words about the song, that means so much! 😊💕
Oh yeah, I also was wondering about @emiliano. Hopefully he’s alright. The last he shared here it was right before a hurricane where he was… 🥺
@rebeca, that’s so beautiful, your description, thank you so much! 😊 I really like the idea of a more softened, melodic approach to playing clawhammer since it is normally rather percussive and harsher in its sound (which I also love about it, but am interested in experimenting with the technique). James Hill played a song using what he called “melodic clawhammer” (which I need to look into more, his exact approach to that) but that deepened my curiosity to playing clawhammer that way, softer, less percussive-sounding. I love the word “bucolic,” excellent word choice! 😅 Thank you for explaining your approach to songwriting on the other page, really appreciate that and your kind words so much! 😊💕July 24, 2024 at 10:31 am #62506karenj
ParticipantHere is my July Challenge submission of Aloha Dreaming. I really enjoyed learning this lovely melody. I wish my harmonics were clearer, but between that and measures 9 and 10, this was my best take. I am looking forward to checking out everyone’s submissions this month. I wasn’t up for it right now, but I do hope to try an original song some day. Thanks again to the Rock Class 101 community.

ParticipantHere is my entry. I attended a music camp in early July in Maryland and one of the classes taught Ukulele Blues and different riffs. I started to understand how often 12 bar songs are used so decided to use that as my song. I did it in A. @Andrew I hope this is acceptable. It’s not completely an original but I did write words to it. If not… well… we she see. I’ve never written a song and these lyrics came very quickly to me. It’s fun… out of my comfort zone but thought I’d had to the humor of our GREAT community here. Everyone is so kind (hint to be kind 🙂 So this is “The G-ma Rock Class Blues”
