Thank you for your feedback. I will continue to play this Etude and work on the timing!
shelleDecember 1, 2024 at 7:57 pm #64727December 1, 2024 at 8:39 pm #64728StephenModeratorHere’s everyone on page 13:
@1481632_m – Great job on this one! You played it at a fast steady tempo and every note sounded spot on! Keep up the great work on the Blues for the future. You’ve got this, you played very well on Etude no. 3!
@grannieannie – Very nice playing on this! You kept a very steady tempo throughout without hesitating to switch from fingerpicking to strumming and back. You are doing a wonderful job on this, keep up the great work!
@gstriph – You captured the feel of this song very well even though you are taking a different approach on how you are strumming it. The feel is one of the hardest aspects of this! Melody B is tricky, but you have the right approach of practicing it slowly and working it up to speed. If you keep at it, I know you’ll get it in time soon! Keep going, your doing great!
@jayton – Great work on this one! You’ve got the notes down and the feel and sound are great as well! There are just a couple of spots with slight hesitations, which means a slight bit more practice at a slightly slower pace will help you master those spots. Keep going, you sound great on this one!
@jody_hendrickson – You played this very well! I enjoy the slightly slower tempo, as it portrays the haunted vibe well at this tempo! I enjoyed your use of dynamics as you swelled the volume into and out of certain phrases. Keep up the great work, and I hope you recover from your left arm issue completely!
@leihali – Very nicely played! I can tell you have great timing from the piano playing you have done, and it has carried over to the ukulele perfectly. You played this one beautifully, and I think you’re ready to try some of the other fingerstyle pieces now. Awesome job!
@joe150 – Great job on this one! You’ve got all of the notes and even added a cool ending! Every now and then there was a small hesitation–maybe you were checking to make sure your fingers were in the right places–and they were! Just trust that you are doing it correctly, and I think you won’t hesitate at those spots anymore. Keep it up, you’re doing great!
@emiliano – Wow, you floated effortlessly through that! I really enjoy the effects you used for this one as well (was it mostly reverb?). You have a great feel and a flow on this, and every note was crystal clear. I hope you have enough time to challenge yourself a bit more on the next one…I’d love to hear how you approach one of Evan’s arrangements. Keep up the great work, that was fantastic.
@tessiert – Very nice job on this one! I like the slides and hammer-ons you added to the piece. They were a nice touch. Keep up the great work!December 1, 2024 at 10:16 pm #64733AndrewKeymasterHere’s everyone on page 14.
@cimarronsailor – Very cleanly played and great timing too! As for the chunks in measures 13 – 15, I actually think it sounded great not playing them. If you do want to add them in the future, the chunk in bar 13 uses the technique I taught in this lesson. And the ones in bar 14 is the same technique you used for bar 26.
@addilein – Nicely played Astrid! So some of the rhythms I’m hearing you play are incorrect. I’d recommend playing along with me in the tab player, slowed down, maybe 60% speed. Start without playing the ukulele. Count out the rhythms as you watch the tab/sheet music scroll across. So for ex, in measures 1 and 2, you would count:1 2& 3 4&
1& 2& 3& 4&When your voice matches my playing exactly, try playing along and counting out loud as you play.
Remember to keep the swing feel intact and I’d recommend watching this lesson on 8th note triplet rhythm. It’s a great resource to help you clearly define those notes as triplets.
The other thing I’d like to mention is that I notice you hug the neck a lot. Check out the advice I left here for @mysticrick. It’ll give you insight into how hugging prevents left hand dexterity, especially when playing melody notes on the A string.
@markmdive – Nicely played Mark! So I noticed that you sit with the ukulele in a classical guitar-like position. I’d recommend watching this lesson and the one that follows it, from our Classical Technique Course, as Steven talks about why that position isn’t ideal for ukulele playing. His lessons cover correct sitting position/posture, as well as, how to hold the ukulele.I’d also recommend checking out this lesson. Form 2 shows you how to use your index finger to help support the neck so it doesn’t move/fall. That is vital for the jumps (up the neck) that this etude uses.
@ukealori – Way to go Lori! BIG congrats on memorizing it and you played it beautifully! Well done 👏
@maryjanew – Nicely done MJ! I think you’ve got a great base established, so from here, I’d work on perfecting one section at a time.
@jasdel – Beautifully played Jasdel! I loved it ❤️December 1, 2024 at 10:23 pm #64734AndrewKeymasterTHANKS TO EVERYONE WHO PARTICIPATED THIS MONTH! WE HAD 93 ENTRIES! YOU GUYS ROCK!

maryjanewDecember 2, 2024 at 12:48 am #64742emilianoParticipantOh, @Stephen, thank you so much for your kind words! I’m not super into music technology, but I do use the Enya reverb that comes with my uke. I’ve already started learning O Come, All Ye Faithful with a few tweaks of my own. I think I’ll have it ready to post this week!
As for Evan’s arrangement, is it Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree? I’ll make sure to hurry up and try learn it too!
Lately, I’ve been busy but super motivated after a recent trip I made. I finally started working on some video game music arrangements I’ve always loved, including creating tabs for them. Tabbing has been really time-consuming, but it’s helping me recognize notes on the staff, which has been both fun and mentally intense, at least for me.
On a brighter note, here’s an update for Andrew: my aunt is visiting in January, and she’s bringing me the baritone ukulele I won in the last contest! Once I get comfortable with it, I plan to create video game music arrangements as duets with both the baritone and my regular uke. It’s going to be such a fun challenge!

December 2, 2024 at 1:57 pm #64746AndrewKeymasterYes, Evan’s doing Rockin’ as a full band arrangement 🙂
Can’t wait to hear the uke! Looking forward to it! And def share a performance of your arrangements, that would be fun to listen to!
December 2, 2024 at 6:14 pm #64753emilianoParticipantOh, nice! I’ll definitely keep an eye out this Friday so I can start learning as soon as it’s released.
For sure, I’ll share it once I get it down. Thanks, Andrew! Wishing you a fantastic December!
December 5, 2024 at 8:10 am #64780mysticrickParticipant@Andrew – Thanks for the important feedback. I appreciate the “8×10 color glossy pictures with circles and arrows on the back of each one explaining what it was about”..LOL.
Seriously, you have absolutely identified an area of left hand technique I need to address. I did go through the Proper Left Hand Form lesson you recommended and will begin to incorporate that into my playing. It feels like a lot of UNDOING of improper habits and will take some work.
It reminds me of a breakthrough I had with Craig and Sarah a few years back when they helped me keep my left hand wrist straighter (It had at a near 90* angle most of the time).
So…thank you very much for taking the time to help me… and all your students… improve.
PEACE
Rick
