Finding a quality tenor that really speaks to you can be difficult when you want to make play them before buying. I feel somewhat spoiled with my Kala Elite Koa tenor. I liked it so much that when I went looking for a second good tenor, I didn’t see much that really impressed me. I was interested in getting a Kala Elite “doghair” mahogany, but no one seemed to have one in stock at the time. Taking your time on that really good tenor might be a good idea. I feel really lucky that my first ukulele turned out to be one that I really love. “if you don’t love it you’re not going to play it”. I haven’t tried Mainland Ukes, and have heard that they are very nice.

    Hi Kate,

I only very occasionally get a stiff first joint on my index finger after tons of playing. I have heard that Tumeric (cucurimin) if very good for arthritic joints. I just tried taking quite a bit and that index finger joint did seem to get relief quickly.

I would definitely agree with Andrew about Taimane being one of my favorites. I saw her last year when she headlined the LA International Ukulele Festival. I wasn’t expecting her to be my favorite part of the festival but she absolutely was. Her performance and playing were nothing less than incredible. Really enjoyed learning and playing “Moon”, transcribed by the amazing Evan. I play “Moon” every day and wish I could have participated but don’t have access to SKYPE. My favorite Taimane video is probably this of “Neptune’s Storm” on a baritone. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JwgyfXWczWg
Would love to find some tab / music to her “Neptune’s Storm”
Having said all that I would like to put Cory Fujimoto (Ukulele Site) as a favorite player. His musical sensitivity is wonderful.

Start by learning to play the melody in the key of maybe F, C, G, A. Then break that down to understand what notes of the scale (1,2,3,4,5,6,7,1) that melody uses. There are bound to be some transitions in the melody where you can determine which chord works that contain that melody note. Key of C (C, Dm, Em, G(7), Am, Bdim.) Sounds complicated but as you get going it starts to work. Key of C you will use the I, IV, V(7) chords quite a bit (C, F, G(7)). I still learning to get better at it but have had some good success.
