recdogParticipantCongrats jeg143 – I have the same case and it is hands down my favorite traveling case, light and small. I know the feeling, I got this case signed last month. I brought my own permanent marker and was happy that she was interested in keeping it for future use.

recdogParticipantGood musicianship surfer jay!
recdogParticipant@gi_gi_ thanks, think I’m able to download a video to a YouTube video now. Hopefully it is straight forward to share that to this site now.
Ron
recdogParticipantHi Kanae, I just have an iPhone. I have no problem watching YouTube and actually watch tons. The problem occurred when I try to download my videos or record something to YouTube so that I might post them to this site.
Thanks, Ron
recdogParticipantWelcome Sarah! I almost never think about “music theory” in all the things I have learned to play on uke or guitar for that matter. Learning how to “count” though is so valuable. Counting well doesn’t come right away but it makes almost everything accessible. Have fun.
Ron
recdogParticipantI got a lot out of Matt’s monthly lessons on modes. As far as a goto place to start playing notes along with something my favorite is mixolydian. It is very useful to have the root right in the middle there.
C to A string for the key of F.
0 2
0 1 3
0 1 3
If you learn all the notes on the E string, you have a great place to start for any key. Also works well with the dominant 7th chord, but put that to the side if not sure what that means.
I then like extending that into other modes for the key you are in including an extended pentatonic.
This “extended pentatonic” is seen in the guitar “fretboard logic” books and the pattern can be used for major or minor of course depending on which note you are starting/referencing.
Here is an example for the key of G or Em, string G to A.
0 2 4
2 4
3 5 7
5 7
or
7 9
7 9 11
10 12
10 12 14
You can check where the G is and the E for minor pentatonic and use same “pattern” for any key.

recdogParticipantCheck this out. Joel might be the world uke setup expert. The DIY stuff works pretty well. Search for “the ukulele review podcast #12”
Ron
recdogParticipantoops. Looking into it. Got a YouTube password but downloading the YouTube app may not be something I want to do.

recdogParticipantHere is my rendition Steven. An adventure recording something on iPhone when I’ve only done that a couple times. Playing it on my new mahogany “doghair” tenor that I like. Very good value for a uke well under a grand.
Ron
recdogParticipantI broke a couple Aquila red low Gs in a very short period of time and never wanted to try them again. When I talked with Joel at the ukulele site he mentioned that his “uke logic” strings were like living water strings. The uke logic are advertised as high density flourocarbon. I have the uke logic on three tenors now and like them. I also really liked the Ukulele Creations PhD strings which I had on two tenors for almost a year. The Ukulele Creations PhD strings are advertised as high molecular weight fluorocarbon. I also have really liked regular Aquila nylgut on one solid wood koa tenor.
Ron
recdogParticipantWith my Kanile’a especially I think it actually tends to open up some during a 1 hour practice session.
Ron
recdogParticipantI’ve been working with “action” quite a bit recently. Can be measured at 12th fret, from top of fret to bottom of string. Good to have a string action gauge or what I have now is just a good scale that starts at zero. I ordered a new kanilea saddle from the ukulele site as I thought my action was too low. I just raised mine up a few tenths of a mm to about 2.7-2.8 and I think the volume is better and still easy to play. My 3 tenors now all have about the same action at the 12th. I have heard Tobias Elof say that he likes it more like 3.0 and he told a story of James Hill going to a shop to get his action raised. The luthier told him that beginners bring ukes in to lower the action and pros bring them in raise it, so you must be a pro. Tobias thinks that too low an action limits the uke.
Action is also measured at the nut slots, which is really important especially for beginners mostly playing on the first four frets. I like there to be just a tiny space, maybe .2mm at the first fret when the third fret is pressed.
Ron
recdogParticipantGreat work. Much congrats on playing the piece so accurately. This one will fly for you. The A part even sounded better the second time.
Ron
recdogParticipantI think it is ideal and you can’t go wrong with learning a piece well as written and with accurate yet fluid counting. Most arrangers know more than I do or have put a lot of work into it. Then make it better in the way that you interpret the piece. I suppose arrangements do vary so I don’t invest the time in learning one unless it sounds really good. There is so much out there to learn from.
Ron
recdogParticipantAs usual, I think Andrew gave you very good advice in getting a Kanile’a! And you have one with fantastic wood and beauty. Not sure how humid it is where you live but I found the Kanile’a to be thirsty uke and sounding especially good humidified.
