Hi Rock Class 101 Community!
We are back with site member challenge #46! WOW, there has now been over 2,200+ members participating in our challenges! If you’ve sat on the sidelines, please join us for this month’s challenge! Challenges are a fun way to stay motivated and a great way to meet fellow ukulele players who are passionate about learning and becoming better players 🙂 And I offer feedback on ALL submissions!
Please watch the video above and read instructions below carefully for details/instructions on this month’s challenge.
Pick 1 from the following 3 RC101 Lessons:
1) Our First Song * – In this lesson, we will be combining fingerpicking and strumming to create and play our first tune! * Taught in its entirety for FREE! DOWNLOAD THE TAB & ACESS THE ON-SCREEN TAB VIEWER FOR FREE!
2) “Everlong” by the Foo Fighters – This arrangement takes inspiration from the acoustic version played by Dave Grohl, thus I would recommend giving it a listen before you begin learning this song.
3) “Santa Fe” by Ottmar Liebert – This Spanish-influenced piece contains 3 distinct melodic sections.

GOALS FOR MEMBER CHALLENGE:
1. Beginner Level: Be able to play one of the lessons as shown by Andrew smoothly and in time. Do not worry about trying to play fast; slow and steady wins the race 🙂
Recommended Piece: Our First Song
2. Intermediate to Advanced Level: Be able to play the lesson as shown by Andrew smoothly, in time, and at or close to the original piece’s tempo.
Recommended Piece (from easier to harder): “Everlong” (Intermediate) OR “Santa Fe” (Advanced)
3. Participation Goal: 35 Rock Class 101 Member Participant Videos/MP3 posted.

GROUND RULES FOR PARTICIPATION:
1. Post your Youtube, Vimeo, or Soundcloud links of you playing 1 of the 3 RC101 pieces anytime between Friday, January 1st until Sunday, January 31st, 11:59pm EST.
The upload feature on the site only supports file sizes up to 5 MB. Members must host their own files. Creating an account is easy and free 🙂 Here are the links to create an account:

2. Submit individually, as a reply, IN THIS POST.
3. Feel free to submit more than one video for the challenge, but additional videos will not count as extra entries into the raffle for the prize.
4. Have fun and don’t be intimidated by this challenge!!! Use this challenge to help you set goals and complete them by a deadline. You can also use this as an opportunity to chat with your fellow Rock Class 101 members and share tips or tricks on this challenge that you think are useful.
5. You must perform the entire piece to receive an entry into the prize raffle. Performance must be submitted by the deadline listed (in #1) above to gain an entry in the raffle, as well as, to receive feedback.
* Note: In my opinion, it is better to show progress versus perfection with these challenges. So if you are a beginner and can only play the first couple of measures. That is completely ok. If you play two more measures of the next challenge piece than you did the previous one, you are on track to getting better. This is what these challenges are about… you learning ukulele and getting better. Remember we are all here to support you no matter what your current playing level is.

Santa Fe ooks like fun! Im glad this came out early so I can take advantage of my vacation days to practice 🙂 Happy New Year!
Hi having fun with Santa Fe atm, already learnt the Part A but on the part B (compass 17) I am not super familiar with slap technique, so I have the next question:
When you do the slap technique where do you hit?
In the ukulele body or you mute the strings with the left hand and then hit the strings to make the percusive sound?

@emiliano – great question! It’s the latter that you described.
That song uses the 2nd type of “chuck” technique, which is integrated into the strum pattern. Here’s a video I shot last year explaining/showing the 2 types and the muting process.
Oh thank you very much @Andrew , I see that make it more clear, I was like completing lifting my fingers from the chord pose to mute the strings so could not achieve the speed needed in section B, also did not know there was a technique call chunk, will aim to check the course you mention on the next weeks, looks like a fun one to learn.
Hey Andrew – loving Santa Fe – I really love the variety of styles that you do – and the challenges often encourage me to look beyond pieces I know.
I have done OK on section A and B – but struggling on C. I’ve tried to slow it down with the player and with youtube, but what I’m hearing and what I’m reading on the music just sounds different and I can’t work out what you are doing.
Looking at bar 31, is it: down, down, up, chuck down, thumbnail up on open A, down, 2nd finger on – thumb up, chuck, thumb up, down with pull off, chuck, thumb up.
It seems shorter when you play it!

Here’s my take on Santa Fe. Was a lot of fun to learn. As usual, I play a tad too fast at least in section B.
@misterbones – Sounds great! I wouldn’t worry about speeding up or whatnot, but instead I’d work on getting the rhythms a bit more accurate in the A melody. Loop 1 bar at a time in the tab player (at whatever speed is comfortable) and try to match my playing 100%.
This advice is more-so for other reading this feedback: this is a song that you want to listen to A LOT. One time in music college, I went up to my teacher and said I’m having trouble with the rhythm of a song. He asked: how many times have you listened to it? I said, a few times. He said, come back after 20 times. I didn’t need to come back.
Hi Andrew, thank you sooo much. That was a fantastic help. There is a 1 note difference between the sheet music and the tab player which threw me out. However, I always find these chucking patterns challenging, which is why I chose this one. I think I’ve nailed it now following your video.. just trying to memorise it! Happy new year. Lisa
