    At the beginning of the month, I didn’t think I’d be able to play either of the beginner songs by the deadline. But, after watching the fantastic lesson and lots and lots of practice I went from not being able to play bar chords at all to getting them to sound right about 75% of the time. Looking forward to the next challenge.

    THIS IS A SECOND ENTRY

    I had to get on the Cielito Lindo train… so many great entries that I saw, I had to try it. I can’t sing and don’t know Spanish – but I can hummmmmm . Tried to work on the barr cords as @andrew recommended last month. My video didn’t catch my best but wanted to get this posted. A first for (hum/sing) while playing/recording… THAT’s a whole different bag!!! Also 2.5 min is long. I really wanted to speed up the second half – vocal but after reading what @Andrew said or discussed with @katazumiri (excellent btw), decided to keep slower rhythm throughout.
    So many Kudo’s deserved to entrants. I’ll post after.

    Here’s Cielito Lindo

    Hi everyone! Here is my entry for the August Challenge. I chose Fields of Gold. I still struggle playing bar cords, but kudos to you for encouraging me to work on them! Good luck everyone!!!

    My choice for this month was a tough one. Fields of Gold was the very first song I learned to play on uke and convinced me that I enjoyed fingerstyle better than strumming. However, I found the RockClass101 version harder than Matt’s original version. Then, I really tried to go out of my comfort zone to learn Cielito but just couldn’t get it good enough by the deadline. So, I decided on My Heart will go on. I still need to work on getting vibrato and feeling to emit from my uke. Let me know if I did better with the rhythm on this one. This time I worked with the player to get better at that.

    It’s been a year since I last posted but I’m still trying. This is my attempt at bury beneath the willow. It’s carried very heavily by the backing track. So, thanks to Christopher and Ashley and the rest of the team for the chance to learn this. The ending always seemed to surprise me when I was recording and otherwise plenty of fumbles but I had fun learning to play it.

    FIELDS OF GOLD
    Hi all 👋 – well here goes…first time ever with one of these RC101 challenges. I almost didn’t post the video because there are parts that I don’t like, but I then realized I’m a learner, so I should get over myself – haha. I have always liked this song and have seen it before, but skipped over it because…well…BARRE chords. 🙀 have a ways to go I think, but I feel happy that now I won’t immediately skip songs that have barre chords.

    I also learned how to do a video recording on my husband’s iMac, how to export it for YouTube and how to create a YouTube channel. (Oh and memorized a song, which is also new for me!) Kinda fun, yes?!

    Grateful for any insights on improvements here.

    First, I want to say the entries are amazing this month. I have really enjoyed listening to them. So much hard work! I worked on Bury Me Under the Willow because I wanted to work on the clawhammer technique. I picked up this used banjo uke awhile back and have been so excited to play it. Loved this song, so beautiful thanks Chris and Ashley. Not perfect, but I think I’m running out of time…🤪. Also, do not include me in drawing this month, thanks😁

    Wanted to give extra kudos to a few but EVERYONE was so good. Those that challenged the claw hammer WOW! @misterbones I look forward to your entries and amazed how quickly you got this. I started but knew I’d never get in a month. @abster crazy how well you and your sister performed. @karenj nice shirt and great take, @dianna too!

    @Leslie
    ’s barre cord were perfect! Andrew pointed out my need to work on them too. @bibilele impressive on a paddle board. How in the world you recorded a great take 😱. @akukes73 what a pretty tone to your Uke. Is it a tenor, what brand?

    @nat-uke
    nice to see 1st timer. I struggled so much to record and try to perform. Still do but we all had to start. Nice entry.

    @the_bumble_bard
    loved your Fields. Very smooth, and enjoy when you show YOUR/OUR struggle when you played claw hammer. I thought you were getting it! I tried but up for Aug, I’ll have to go back because I love banjo and the bum ditty rhythm 👏😁 good luck everyone , Louisa

    Hi all-

    I worked on Cielito Lindo this month (no vocals!), only got to about 70% speed so far. For some reason I had a hard time memorizing this one, hence the many hesitations.
    Loved listening to everyone’s entries, and definitely going to take a stab at the clawhammer course, looks very fun!

    Best,
    Jody

    Fields Of Gold. Love this tune and I found it difficult to play it with emotions and show my musicality. My play seemed rigid and I need to loosen up and work on controlling the volume of each note played.

    It didn’t help trying to get the recording done after a stressful day at work.

    Appreciate feedback on areas to work on and improve.

    @leb397, that was so lovely!! That sounded very pretty with your humming. Really well done with that. I didn’t try that one but I do love how it sounds and I really like the style of Steven’s arrangements. They’re difficult, but you did a great job with that. 😁💕

    Thank you so much for your kind words! 😊 I feel a little bad about not being able to learn BMBTW. I feel like I’m pretty good with the clawhammer technique, but felt really overwhelmed by the length and complexity of that song for some reason. I may try again to learn the solo part at least. I think I’m just in an awkward place where the beginner songs are getting pretty easy (and I love to mess around with them a lot 😅) but the intermediate often feel still too difficult.

    But I need to be brave like @dianna and others and just go for it. 😅 @dianna, that was amazing! I loved that you pushed through even if you did have a little bumbles in the ditty; 😂 that’s how you do it. Really well done though!

    Everyone else has truly done an amazing job, as well! I want to comment on all of them. Agreed, good luck to all!

    I love this song “Fields Of Gold” arranged by Matt Dahlberg! I only have one HiG Ukulele but it was perfect for this song. I plug it into and amp so it would be louder. But it is hot here in NorCal so there is background “shushing” noise from my fan!
    this has been another busy hard month with not enough time to really get this down but I will keep working on it.
    I almost had it all memorized but my brain disconnects when the recording starts. 😩
    I start the song, get half way and then I restarted it. ugh!
    @Andrew- I know you will tell me to practice with the tab viewer, but sometimes it is so hard to practice with it! But I’m trying…😩

    Talk about getting it in at the last minute 😂 I was out of town for 2 weeks and just got back, jet lagged and all but I have to do Cielito Lindo. I love this song. It is rough but I will continue to work on it to get it smooth. Thanks for the challenges.
