edwardParticipant“Here’s My Song For January’s Challenge.” Richland Woman Blues” By Mississippi John Hurt. Taken from the book By Mark Nelson “Juke’n The Uke”. I have played this song every day for a hour or so. I have used a metronome which kind of messed with me. Need to work on that. I bite of more then I could chew with this song. I could you some one one Andrew. Hope the computer picks my name. Everyone has done a great job. Go Rockclass 101. PEACE

annefgodfreyMemberHi Andrew,
If you have a minute, would you please do a brief demo on triplets in DayDreaming.
Thanks so much,

MemberThis is my progress video. I hope to pick up the tempo and make it to the end of the song!

rickeymikeMemberHere is my January submission. I did wind up choosing the Sinatra arrangement. Same notes as Andrew’s arrangement with a few rhythm changes.

lisadmhParticipantGreat job Rickey! Gracie sounds fabulous in your hands. How do you like her?
Smudge, sounds good! That song is on my wish list for sure. Love it.

MemberHere is my January entry:
I played it at about 75% speed and managed to hit all the backbeats except for measures 21 and 22; I always missed those. I wish I had had more time this month to work on the timing, but it was still fun to learn how to add backbeats in a song.January 26, 2019 at 11:41 am #24422
rickeymikeMemberLisa, Thank you.
Loving my Gracie. She has quite a sustain on those strings so I have to be more careful than before with touching the strings, expecially with my nail. The slightest touch will result in a buzz because the string is still vibrating. I’m 100% pleased with Gracie. So glad I was able to play a half dozen or so concerts before I decided.January 26, 2019 at 2:25 pm #24439ukukelley1
ParticipantRickeymike,
Sounds great! Can tell you must be doing well with the notation course. What kind of concert did you end up getting?Lisa,
Very beautiful original song. Amazing how your composing talents are growing!Sheryl

It’s a Fender Grace Van signature.January 26, 2019 at 9:09 pm #24457
stinyukeMember@lisadmh Wow, I’m impressed! Really like the song. It’s actually one of my goals to write a song some time, but i still have so much to learn until I’ll be able to do that 🙂

lyndallkParticipantIts good to hear what people are doing. I feel I’m getting to know many of you and see and hear your progress over time. That is one of the joys of Rock Class 101!
So, here is my version of Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah and Jake’s arrangement (as best as I can do it!) There are a couple of glitches, but all in all I’m pleased to have played a reasonable version while recording it, and without music – fully memorised. That was my goal. I was going to put together an outtake movie of my practice throughout the month, but I just don’t have time. So there was lots of stops and starts, many start over agains, some knocks on the door, requests from the other room, a little swearing especially if I made it 4 mins in…. But finally…
You may notice some lightening in the background. Sadly the heat and humidity didn’t break with a big storm though. Still hoping.
Anyway, here it is – I hope you enjoy it if you get a chance to watch

rickeymikeMemberlyndal, Very, very nice. 4 1/2 minutes is quite a long time to go without mistake. Good job.
January 27, 2019 at 4:05 pm #24518
lisadmhParticipantLyndal, excellent. As Rickey says, that’s a long time to sustain attention and clean playing. You did an awesome job.
Thanks for the comments on my song, guys.
Here’s my second original for the month. It’s not quite polished, but I wanted to share, because it’s one of those days when I needed a little happy in my day.
Again, very simple, based on stock chords, but I found the chords using the circle of fifths, so that’s progress. It’s got some interesting timing in it, or it would if I could pull it off. This is maybe not the greatest take. I have come to love writing songs though.
Thanks for listening.

rickeymikeMemberLisa, I like it. It reminds me of a song that a maid in waiting would play for Mary Queen of Scots.
Sound is great. New Mike?
