    I AM A PREMIUM MEMBER

I’ve always loved Dream A Little Dream of Me so that’s what I picked to learn this month. It’s not quite perfect but I only had time for the single take and I had fun with it so it’s loose. Anyway, thanks so much to Matt for his simple and beautiful arrangement. Great job to everyone participating, you’re all winners!

Great song, great arrangement. Although it’s very, very far from perfect, I’m more satisfied with this performance than anything I’ve submitted in past challenges. Thanks to Matt, Andrew, and everyone at RC101 for all the great lessons!

    Dear All

It would be very appreciated if there is anyone who can help me to understand the titles of the music sheets in this challenge. I would like to understand what songs I play. 🙂

“St. James Infirmary” : Does it mean a hospital named St. James?
“Five foot two, eye of blue”: Does it mean a man/woman having blue eyes in about 160cm height?

Thank you very much for your help in advance.
    Kind Regards,
    Seoul

@seoulkim, the short answer is it’s art, and therefore open to interpretation.

I find the history of St. James Infirmary to be pretty interesting though.

The song dates back at least as far as 18th century England and over that time the meaning seems to have changed considerably. I think the most plausible interpretation of the modern lyrics is that they are sung from the point of view of a soldier returning from war. He finds his wife/partner/lover is at St James Infirmary and has died from venereal disease, and then comes to the realization that he likely isn’t far behind. Granted this is one interpretation of one version of the song, but all versions seem to have sorrow and loss as common themes.

Yes, your assumptions are correct. Infirmary is an old fashioned word for hospital, and St. James is the name of that hospital.
And yes, five foot two, eyes of blue pertains to a person of that height and eye color.

Here is my Entry of Dream a Little Dream of Me. I really like this song so I put my high G back on. I have worked on this quite a bit but I’m still pretty slow on some transitions.

    Hey everyone,

This time I decided to play a more difficult song and this was very challenging for me.
I worked for this song „here comes the sun“ the whole month. And really, this january we had a lot of sun, cold but sunny.
At the end I am happy with it, although I am often not in time and at the two last measures my pinky wasn‘t able to hit the string in the right way.

    Hello RockClass101,

I am a premium member and this will be my second monthly challenge.

I’m a beginner and I had fun learning 2 songs this month – “Dream a Little Dream of Me” and “Here Comes the Sun”.

I decided to record and share my playing of “Here Comes the Sun”. I had to play at a slower tempo to be in control and reduce mistakes. Thanks for listening and feedbacks to help me improve are very welcome and appreciated.

This is the very first song I’ve learned on an instrument since playing clarinet in high school many years ago. Thanks for the fun challenge!

    Hello there,

I am back with “Here Comes the Sun”!
This month I had a lot of time to practice and I am actually quite happy with my result.
Although the strumming part took me a while! And I am really motivated to work on my triplet strum.

    See you next month :D!

    Hi,

    congrats on 500 lessons!
Dream a Little Dream was the first arrangement I learned for a monthly challenge back in 2019, so I thought I revisit it again.
(The barre chords were actually a bit more difficult on the tenor uke then on the concert on which I played it back then :))
