@marianne – Very beautifully played, Marianne! I do have one suggestion for you. Sometimes I hear notes that aren’t sustaining as long as they could. This usually comes down to one of two things: fingering choices or lifting your fingers before the full note value has ended.
For example, in measure 6, if you look at the transition from the first chord to the second, Steven frets the first chord with his middle and ring fingers, leaving his index finger free for the second chord. In your performance, your index finger is used for both chords, which means it has to move from the first to the second, cutting the sustain short.
For the second point, look at the first double stop in measure 7. Steven keeps his fingers planted on that double stop for the entire measure, whereas you lift them after the initial pluck. Again, that shortens the sustain.

Thanks a million @Andrew! I really appreciate the feedback! And yes you are right to point those 2 places out. They were deliberate fingering swaps as I am still struggling with the injury in my thumb and I don’t think it was wise to pick such a hard one with all these barre chords right after the incident 😂 Holding the barre chords longer or having them back to back was getting too painful haha. I aggravated the situation further in practice 😭
I will wait to get back to full form before attempting those better finger choices for more sustain. Definitely sounds better with sustain throughout.

I just got home from two weeks in Paris and Nice. It was a wonderful (tho very hot) family vacation until our final day in Paris when I slipped one a wet stair and fell “weirdly and very hard” on my left wrist. I heard and felt a bone break and instantly experienced some of the worst pain I’ve ever experienced 🙁
I will not be able to work (I’m a line cook) or play Uke (or do many other things that require two hands, typing this right now, for example, is very tricky) for about 6 weeks (if I’m lucky). This development has me feeling very depressed. It’s just a stupid, humbling accident… but of course it could have been worse. For example, I’m very grateful it was: A. not my dominate hand, B. at the very end of our trip rather than the beginning, and C. that I wasn’t hurt any worse.
I do want to participate in this challenge and to keep my perfect attendance for all RC101 member challenges but I’m not sure how 🙁 Anthony is there a way I could post something using only my right hand that would satisfy the requirements of the challenge? Or should I just accept my sad fate and sit out this month (and probably next month too) – thought?

Sorry to hear that happened Brett! This challenge carries on throughout Summer, what if you take off this and next month and post 3 in September. Happy to count each as a separate entry considering the circumstance 🙂
Oh, @brettboy, quelle dommage! To have to face at least six weeks without playing is bad enough, but you must be one of the few, if not the only one of us, who’s participated in every challenge. I wonder if an original tune, with a promise that you’ll play it later, would be grounds for a special dispensation (I’d vote for that). Frightening how just one little slip can have such a huge, long-lasting impact. I wish you a speedy recovery. (I can just imagine the doctors, when they inspected your hand, saying, “Regardez la force et la souplesse de ses doigts! Il faut absolument qu’on découvre son secret!”)
@marianne: I look forward to your submissions each month – this one is as beautiful as ever.@brettboy, so sorry to hear about your wrist, that’s such a huge bummer on multiple levels! I hope you heal up ASAP and it isn’t too painful now. 🤗
This is just a funny thought mostly, but @Andrew, what if you composed a right-handed etude just for this occasion and added it to the challenge? That would be so funny and it’s interesting to consider if that’s possible… but your idea probably makes more sense. 😅😆

@brettboy sorry to hear of your accident. I hope it will heal quickly. I know that this is a challenge to learn certain songs each month and technically participation means posting a performance. But I also think that listening and providing support and useful tips are also a form of participation. Maybe you can participate this month in that way. Also, back when I broke a finger on my left hand and could not fret anything, I worked on starting to learn ghost strum. Maybe you can work on some strumming pattern you do not yet have mastered (though I know you are very skilled so you may already know them all). Wishing you a speedy recovery
