    Hi everyone!
    This month I chose “Whiskey Before Breakfast “; I wanted something lighthearted and not too serious. I decided this was just the thing. Andrew, please forgive me—I turned the duet into a quartet. I recently saw someone playing a washboard with a bicycle horn attached to it, and I wanted to use one too. The problem is, real horns are huge and very loud… Anyway, now I have a child’s bicycle horn—a “little bee” model—which is compact and relatively “quiet.” So, I allowed myself a bit of playful mischief.

    As it turned out, the song touches on a complex, “socially significant” issue. And if you really think about it, it’s not all that cheerful. But if you don’t overthink it, you can simply join in on the final verse and chorus:

    One by one everybody in town
    Heard our ruckus and they all came down
    Pretty soon all the streets were a-ringin’
    With the sound of the whole town laughin’ and singin’
    Lord protect us, Saints preserve us
    We been drinkin’ whiskey ‘fore breakfast

    I chose Song #2 in the course – “The in and out pattern”. I am loving this approach to learning! I really like how you can focus on just one thing. For this song, I tried really hard to work on improving the tone of the individual notes.

    It’s a lot of fun to step back a bit and let the picking hand do its thing without having to think too much about it. My next goal is to eliminate the clicking sounds of my fingernails randomly hitting the Uke body.

    Oh, almost forgot. If you listen closely, toward the end you can hear my eleven year-old girl yelling something down to her mom in the background. (Gonna have to build me a recording studio 😀.)

    Thanks so much for creating this course!

    Best,
    Trace

    @brettboy so sorry to hear about your injury. Don’t feel deflated, we look forward to your Sep submissions and a full recovery!

    Thank you so much @grannieannie. Your message is so sweet. Waiting to hear yours.

    @gi_gi_
    haha nice to hear you chose the same one and thank you so much! Look forward to hearing yours as well. Unfortunately in over practicing for a previous submission that was a bit of a challenge in terms of barring, I hurt my left thumb that pushes in on the neck (holding the pushed form for way too long). Part of the thumb lost feeling in it but then it slowly came back! Lesson to self: don’t practice for very long stretches and if you really have to, take breaks!! When it starts hurting, STOP haha

    @brettboy
    and @cyman_t – I am glad you liked what I came up with! However, I don’t have a duck 😂
    I have a bee that knows a foreign language (it can quack like a duck)!

    @joe150 – Very beautifully played Joe! The only thing I’d do, since you’re playing it on a low G, is sub out the single notes that are played with the open G for the 3rd fret on the E string. So that would be the two open Gs in measure 11 and the one in measure 15.

    @katazumiri
    – That was awesome Lena! And your playing technique for the piece was perfect! Well done 👏

    @yukalele
    – Bravo David! I shared your performance in our newsletter yesterday 🙂

    Glad to hear you are enjoying the new course!

    @tessiert
    – Tone and feel were phenomenal! Your attention to detail paid off! Great playing 👏

    Thank you for the kind words on the course!

    I few years back I attempted to learn the ghost strum. Didn’t really get it so thought I would work on house of the rising sun in another attempt to learn this strum. Watching my video, I see that most of the time on the ‘ghost’ strike I am hitting the fingerboard rather than the actual string. It adds a little tap instead of that ghost note. Will need to figure out how to correct that. Will probably need to slow it down a bit to figure that out. Anyway this is what I have so far.
