@grannieannie, I know what you mean! There are definitely just some songs where they are not as “natural” to play for whatever reason – maybe just because you play in a different kind of style or approach. I definitely have experienced that. Also, that’s really lovely that you have so much natural beauty around you that can’t be tampered with! 😊
@leslieb, that sounds very lovely! @Andrew left you some great advice just for keeping the pace, but your playing sounded very beautiful! 😊
@gi_gi_ absolutely gorgeous, friend!! 😍 I love the feel behind your playing so much and how you really “dug in” to the groove (as Andrew likes to say) and really drew so much feeling out of that one! I like that you really let the notes breathe and sound out in all their beauty and pizazz (?). Haha! Yes, it gets to a point where you start thinking “oh, gosh, I can’t mess up now” near the end of the song, or else I’ll start over. 😂😂 But you played absolutely perfectly! Yay!! Also that sigh at the end – that moment where you realize you were holding your breath through the whole song! 😂 I also have screencapped Andrew’s comments before because countless times they have made my day and lifted my spirits when I was feeling bad about my playing – and indeed to look back on when you’re struggling. Ha, yes!
@johanna2509, oh, okay, that makes perfect sense with the outdoor recording that you’d “dub over” it later! I also would like to get one of those pick up things, but it seems all of my technology is too outdated. Some day, lol. Thank you so much about Free Fallin’, that was such a huge deal for me to get over that fear of strumming. So much of the time, the only thing holding us back is our own self-imposed limitations (fear, self-doubt, etc.) – that was the case there, I think. Haha!! See, this whole time, all I needed to do was glue googly eyes to myself and I was able to break freeeeee! 😂
@kanique, such lovely playing! Really a flawless performance with such beautiful feeling / style! 😊 Wait, what? That one is by George Gershwin? How did I not know that…?! 😂
@anyon1, I think I missed your entry earlier, but wow, that was a lovely take on Free Fallin’! Absolutely perfect. Very clear and apparently you have a much better sense of rhythm because you seemed to sense the beat enough to not have to do the non-stop up’s and down’s with strumming. For me, that’s the only way I can strum remotely on time. 😂 Haha!! I should really trademark that somehow. You know, I have mailed googly eyes to more than one person in the uke community at this point, but I have other “targets” in mind for that. As always, TMI, but thank you so much, I was so thrilled and amused that actually worked!! 😂
@lhamilton, beautiful take on that one! I also had that exact same struggle with the high section – you do have to hit those strums somewhat exactly because otherwise you miss the melody notes. But it sounded very lovely! 😊

Here is my June Challenge submission of Summertime. This was certainly a fun song to learn and helped to get me into a summer vibe. The difficulty was a bit challenging for me and I struggled to get a clean recording, not to mention full tempo or memorization. Here is the best of a zillion takes. Everyone’s submissions have been wonderful which help make mine feel even less satisfying but also help motivate me to improve.

@Andrew: could you explain what’s meant by playing “behind the beat”? Thanks.
@grannieannie – Sure! We can choose to play behind, on, or ahead of the beat. All 3 produce a different feel/groove.
Imagine you are playing quarter notes to a click. Just the open A string. If you play exactly when the metronome chimes, you are playing on the beat. A microsecond after it chimes, behind. And a microsecond before, ahead.
Behind the beat gives us a relaxed feel. This is common in R&B and blues. On the beat gives us a precise or neutral feel. This is common in pop and classical. And ahead gives us a driving, urgent feel. This is common in punk rock.
Here’s a video to watch if you wanna dive deeper. I haven’t watched it, but I’ve seen many from Scott. He’s an amazing musician and teacher, so I’m sure he explained and demo-d playing behind the beat well.
@karenj – Great playing, Karen! From here, I’d keep working towards full memorization, but I’d prob do it by tackling one section at a time. That way, you can also focus on note clarity, timing, feel, etc.
I know it’s easy to feel intimidated by other players, but you’re doing great! If you’re getting a little better each day, that’s the real win.
@terryfallon3 – Well done, Terry! My only suggestion would be to play along with Steven in the tab player. I think that would help tighten up the timing and flow. Keep up the great work!I AM A PREMIUM MEMBER

I picked Summertime Swing which is a fun happy tune written by Andrew and taught by Matt, thanks guys!! I wanted to record outside to get the summer vibes going but it has been sooo hot here that I had to wait till 8pm to go out in my yard! Well, I started to lose the light and get bit by bugs! I plugged by Uke into an iRig iPhone interface and was recording audio in Garage Band 🙄, trying to use equipment and experiment😵💫. Before I got eaten alive or irritated the neighbors, I went inside and continued to record audio in Garage Band. I had a little fun with the video and was able to sync the very last part with the last video I recorded. Enjoy!
I will keep working on this nice tune and use it as a “pocket” song 😝.

Awesome summer challenge! Really wanted to learn Free Fallin’, but I am just to Zelda minded nowadays… (Do not know what Nintendo did this Month to ignite that :P)
I also did Song of Storms 2 years ago and really did not do it much justice then. So good time to record it with a new Low G uke and a bit more experience 😀Premium Member
