    Hi Andrew!
    Thank you! I am glad I found your site and am excited. I feel motivated to keep learning more and the community here seems amazing.
    I hadn’t realized that I am a premium member 🫣😁 can I still participate in the giveaway and how can I add the premium tag to my existing post?
    Sorry, ‘newbie question’ ☺️
    Regards

    Thanks Andrew! I’m glad the playing didn’t sound too bad. I was doing the slap technique on the bass but it doesn’t come out very loud in the recording. I wasn’t entirely happy with the sound of the mute strums on the tenor uke.

    I’d recorded the accompaniment while listening via earbud to the recorded Stephen’s accompaniment while reading the score from Patreon. Then, while listening via earbud to my accompaniment, I recorded the soprano part.

    Putting the two together on iMovie was an interesting challenge. I’d just moved from PC to a 14-inch MacBook Pro and this was the first real non-setup task I’d done in the new machine. I was impressed at how easy it was to send the videos from my iPad to the Mac but that was where the easiness stopped 😀 . Pulling two videos and syncing them was rather interestingly difficult on that platform — a bit like organizing a closet in the dark.

    I first learned how to do the basics in iMovie (lots of YouTube videos). After a tons of fiddling and trimming and moving stuff on the timeline, I finally realized that the important part was to make the ending jive — which meant learning how to slow things down for both video and play from the back while going back to the front and paring off film from the soprano. When the two endings matched, the accompaniment at least basically accompanied. Then I lessened the sound of the accompaniment so it didn’t overwhelm. And then I learned how to save the result.

    Since then I’ve learned how to make picture in a picture work (I’d put the accompaniment in the bottom tray and it refused to move up so I could make it the inserted picture) and I’ve learned how to make the film and music timeline a bit bigger which would have greatly helped syncing.

    Anyway it was a fascinating exercise. I’m enjoying the bass.

    @Andrew Thank you so much! I use the ukulele’s built in pickup and an external audio interface. I didn’t add a lot of effects in the recording program, I just amplified the higher frequencies (which amplified the string noise as well I guess) and added some noise reduction. I still have to learn how the effects affect the recording and how to combine them though. 😊

    Thank you so much! I enjoyed your clawhammer version of Etude no. 5. I like how you can achieve a completely different vibe with that technique. 😊 I love this etude too, it is so relaxing to me.

    thanks @Andrew and @The_Bumble_Bard 🙂
    haha @Andrew, so everytime I tried to slow it down, I would find myself speeding it up again. I think my fingers got too used to the groove at that speed, but I will definitely give it a shot!!

    The only thing I can point out is there’s a few minor pauses in some of the transitions.

    @Andrew
    , thanks for this. I was aware of this as well. I may post an update after smoothing this out if I have time! 🙂

    – Premium membership awards you double entries for the prize, whereas, basic (free) only awards one entry. All you have to do is add this text to your post: “I am a premium member”

    TY for the kind words, I’m glad you found us too 🙂

    @lhamilton
    – Try using Garage Band to record the audio. Then take that audio and line it up to the video in iMovie. You’ll be able to get one video perfectly aligned to the audio, every other video will be “close” enough, but never perfect.

    @johanna2509
    – When I recorded the performance for this etude, I picked up interference with the uke pickup. That rarely happens, but it was bad enough that I had to clean the recording. I used free tools with Audacity. While it got rid of the noise, it stripped away some of the sonic quality of the recording.

    We now use RX by Izotope to clean tracks. It offers superior quality to Audacity, but it still comes at a cost. We try to not use it for performances, unless absolutely necessary. For example, in Chris’s new performance, there was a car horn beeping in the background for a few seconds. But it was only audible in the “bass only” backing track. So we removed it from that track and left it in the master. For the etude I linked earlier, it still would have been best to just re-record, even though we have better tools.

    Thanks, Andrew! I use Garage Band but more as a preamp/pedal and have never (yet) had any luck with recording. I wonder if I’d need a mic that worked with an iPad — I’ve never had any luck with that — though now I have the MacBook, maybe that will manage. I’ll do some hunting.

    Everyone’s submissions are so good. I’m just realizing I wasn’t notified on any of them because I hadn’t clicked the notify me box and/or submitted even a message. I will try to put something together before the month is over. Nice work everyone.

    I chose etude 35. This is the first song I have ever played on a baritone. Amazing how just a bit of difference in size can throw you off and make you have to abandon muscle memory. Maybe it is just me, but it took me a bit to get used to the distance between frets. This etude is fun, I highly recommend it to those who have not tried it yet. Thank you @andrew.

    This is my 3rd attempt to submit. I didn’t see the other ones for some reason.
    Hopefully it’s going through!

    Great arrangement to add to my chord melody repertoire!

    Heyho Rockclass,

    What fantastic contributions from all of you this month! Wow!

    I started out learning Evans’ wonderful Etude no. 22. Then I decided to move a little out of my comfort zone and moved on to Etude no. 9.

    What can I say? Now I had my challenge…

    My goal was to do it in one take. Unfortunately I couldn’t do it without making a mistake – let alone hitting the horrible 156 bpm in the third part…

    A great thanks- or friendsgiving to everyone who celebrates it,

    Markus
