    Hi Diane,

I’ve taught a few 5 and 6 year olds and the best advice I can give you is to teach simplified material. Single note melodies and chords will be best. Try to get your grandson to use more than one finger for playing too. Don’t forget to explain proper form (probably every lesson) and do correct his hand(s) if needed.

    So, let’s list some examples:

Single note melody for “Jingle Bells”, just the first part: “jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way”

Using the thumb to strum chords, again single note chords: C or C7. Have him strum quarter notes and count for him.

Give these a shot and let me know how it goes! If you need more ideas in the future, don’t hesitate to ask 🙂

    Cheers,

    Drew

    Hi Danny,

I would say the standard high G string set should be fine for that ukulele. I recommend Aquila strings. You can check them out on Amazon HERE.

Good question. I generally have a preference to strum instead of pluck. But, it really comes down to what’s most comfortable for you and/or what you think fits the song better.

Def, let me know how it goes for you!

Hey Krister, that’s awesome. I’m so happy to hear the site is helping you progress with your playing 🙂 As far as that song, it will be down this year at some point. It’s been requested countless times, so I will get to it soon. And, I’m looking forward to it, great song and I’m a huge fan of her brother Nick!

Thanks guys, I added them to my request list. I’m going to be working on developing more of a format for weekly lessons this year. For example:

Week 1 – fingerstyle arr. of popular tune
    week 2 – concept lesson

etc… This should help add variety and give me more time to prepare for the more complex arrangements.

Great question! That song only plays that high for the last few notes. You can play that section down an octave (3rd, 4th and 6th fret) instead of 15, 16 and 18. Basically subtracting 12 frets.

Most songs on this site do not move beyond the 15th fret as it’s just too hard to reach higher with the body blocking hand movement beyond the 15th fret.

Hey Keithy, great post! I’ll check out Astraluna. Funny, I just sent a list of some of my fav female uke artists to a friend yesterday. Here is the list I sent:

Danielle ate the sandwich – singer/songwriter

    Original on uke:

Her newest original music video did very well:

    —-

Taimane – My fav uke artists. Amazing player.

TEDx Talk – just playing in the beginning:

    Original music video:

    —-

Victoria Vox – Great musician overall. Kills at mouth trumpet! Fun fact, she went to Berklee with John Mayer and he wrote “Victoria” about her.

    Original:

    —-

Sarah Maisel – The most traditionally trained on this list – jazzy. She’s great.

    How High the Moon:

    —-

Olivia Millerschin: Always playing a uke, but I don’t see her much in uke community. I think she’s fantastic, she’s selling out concerts for her new cd. This song is on it, great duet.
