Here’s my April submission of Travis Picking Etude. I’ve struggle to play as smoothly as I would like, especially once I push the record button. But the extra “help” from my buddy Leo made this take extra fun. I’ve also been working on the lovely Skye boat Song but haven’t had enough time lately to fully commit.

Here is my March submission of Winter Glass. I really enjoyed this piece. And I want to give a huge shout out to Matt for this lovely song and also his wonderful teaching style. What Mark Wahlberg brings to Hollywood, Matt Dahlberg brings to Rock Class 101!Happy Spring to all.
KarenHere’s my February challenge submission of Tremolo Picking Etude. Apart from the fact that I can’t grow my nails, I wanted to practice using a pick to augment starting to learn Mandolin. This is still pretty choppy, especially the C section. But considering I could barely hold a pick when I started, I am feeling okay about my progress. And I am working to let go of expectations for a “perfect” take. Happy Mardi Gras, Chinese New Year and Ramadan, and Olympics too.

I have been very interested in Bluegrass lately and thus searched in that genre, I was tempted to revisit (and hopefully Improve) one of the tunes I’ve already done, but decided to go with Whiskey Before Breakfast.
1. Execution: Learn to play Whiskey Before Breakfast at full tempp and as relaxed as possible. I’ll probably learn both parts but have found it too frustrating to try to sync 2 recordings successfully. That may be a goal for another time. . .
2. Application: Complete the song lesson in the first week. Continue to practice at least 10 minutes/day. Play with backing track at 50% the first week, 75% the following week, then 100% for remainder of the time to polish it for a final recording.
3) Evaluation: Post recording by the end of the month with a focus on clean rhythms, sustain, and a relaxed feel. I hope to be able to keep in time with the recorded backing.

Here is my version of Silver Bells. It is such a lovely song and a beautiful arrangement. Thank you Matt! Although rather somber, I was working on playing with more sustain and emotion. I’ve been feeling rather sad about the recent violence, especially during what is supposed to be such a happy time. I’me sending you all wishes for a joyous holiday season and a peaceful new year.

Here is my November challenge submission of Over the River and Through the Woods. I have fond memories of when my family of 7 would pile (all unbelted back then) into our van for the long trip to my grandmothers and sing the only verse we knew over and over. I have so much to be thankful for these days, including RC 101. Thanks for the many wonderful lessons and the challenge (aka love/hate relationship) to learn and record these monthly songs. I may revisit La Gitanita which was one of my first submissions quite a few years ago.

KqrenThank you Andrew for the tips and feedback. I’ve notice on the videos that I stretch my strings at times, especially when I tense up once I hit that record button. I’ll keep working on that, and the slides too.
Here’s my October Challenge submission of Iron Man. I still missed most of those slides, but I need to call this my best for now. It’s also part of my effort to focus on progress rather than perfection. Hopefully my effort did Ozzie proud despite the mistakes. So many great submissions so far this month!

KarenI’ve been having fun working on Iron Man but can’t seem to get the “slidy notes” to ring out. I’ve cheated by plucking them, but the slide sounds so much better. Every now and then I can get the sustain, but mostly I am lucky to get 2 or 3 of the 4 notes. Any tips? Thank you!
Here’s my September challenge submission of A Shade of Minor. Thank you Andrew for this lovely piece. I enjoyed learning it and have also continued to work on relaxing my wish for a perfect take. So here you go. I am looking forward to viewing others’ submissions and what looks to be rock and roll for next month! Happy Fall Y’all!
@leb397: Kudos on such as great job with Cripple Creek! I know it isn’t for everyone, but I must say that I love the banjo sound. Thanks for the shout out, and I certainly recognize this song is harder than it seems. Your hard work paid off and you nailed it.

KarenHere’s my August submission of Crossing Hemispheres which is the capstone piece for the Next Level Strumming. Matt is such a great teacher and I hightly recommend this course. I worked hard on this but it was a lot of fun. And I also worked hard on relaxing my perfectionist tendencies by limiting the time to record the submission, and focusing on progress and fun. So here it is. I’m looking forward to see what everyone else has been doing this month.
Andrew, congratulations again on your RC 101 milestone. I hope you had a nice, well deserved break.

KarenMy goal is to improve strumming techniques by completing the Next level Strumming course. I will complete all modules and record and post a video of the lovely capstone piece, Crossing Hemispheres. It is feeling a little ambitious, so I hope to also work on another goal that was inspired by several comments in last month’s challenge. A couple of other members mentioned their perfectionism and limiting their recordings. I will set a specific number of takes and/or time spent trying to get a clean take and pick the best of the imperfect options.
