Hi Rock Class 101 Community!
Let’s do another Lightning Round! We had over 75 well thought-out questions come in last year for our first lightning round and I know this year we can top that! And hey, this wouldn’t be Rock Class 101 without an amazing giveaway! This year we’re giving away an autographed Jake Shimabukuro ukulele to one lucky person! Please watch the video above and read instructions below carefully for details/instructions for this giveaway/lighting round.
Lightning Round: In a Nutshell
1) Ask me ANY Ukulele question. It can be on any ukulele related topic. For example: technique, theory, ukulele brands, etc. Questions related to the instrument itself will be answered by Mike from Uke Republic.
2) Questions should be informative based. Please do not request a song. Questions should be able to be answered in a 15-30 second time frame. This does not mean that you can not ask a complex question. Because, if you ask a complex question, and it’s interesting, I might just make an entire lesson video to answer that question!
3) Lets aim for 25 questions to be answered for our second Lightning Round!
_______________
GROUND RULES FOR PARTICIPATION:
1. Post your question anytime between Friday, March 23rd till Monday, April 2nd, 11:59pm EST.
2. Submit individually, as a reply, IN THIS POST.
3. Please submit ONLY one question for this lighting round.
4. Have fun and ask Mike and I ANY question. There are no dumb questions!
* Note: The lightning round is a fun way for Mike and I to interact with you guys! It also presents the opportunity to ask the type of questions you normally would if you were taking 1 on 1 private lessons.

March 23, 2018 at 10:50 am #16240edwardParticipantShould I be losing sleep over the proper humidity for my sold wood ukulele? If so what is the proper humidity?
March 23, 2018 at 11:11 am #16243lswerdMemberHow should I care for my fingernails – what’s the best length for left and right hands?
March 23, 2018 at 11:14 am #16244ukulelethemesParticipantAlthough I’m still a novice, I’d like to start recording myself and posting videos but am severely struggling to create high-quality audio on the recordings. There are clearly tools out there > $500+ to assist here but I was wondering the best “bang for your buck” when it comes to recording tools.
Thanks.
March 23, 2018 at 11:15 am #16245borealisParticipantThanks to you I am learning fingerpicking and tabs. I feel that that is my highest expression of playing the uke and where I get the most enjoyment. That said, in groups, almost everyone is jamming on chords and strumming – my picking sounds discordant – it stands out . . . do you think it is inappropriate to fingerpick the tunes in groups?
(I am not good enough to solo) Thank you and rock (101) on:)
March 23, 2018 at 11:17 am #16246miwakuParticipantI’m a beginner ukulele instructor. What’s a good way to demonstrate using the Circle of Fifths to new music students?
March 23, 2018 at 11:19 am #16247jacknerbs54ParticipantI noticed that my Ukulele is not on tune everytime I use it so, I have to tune it again and again to get it on tunE. How do I avoid my Ukulele not getting out of tune?
March 23, 2018 at 11:19 am #16248tcaineMemberHow should I think about using scales vs embellishing triads when improvising?
March 23, 2018 at 11:21 am #16249kayleighbMemberHow do you get back that motivation to play/learn when you are going through a bit of a slump? I losy my confidence a bit trying to learn Canon even though I knew it was beyond my limit. Since then I’ve found it hard to get back on it!
March 23, 2018 at 11:28 am #16250onlineannoyanceParticipantAside from appearance, are there any significant differences in the care or playing of ukuleles made with more exotic woods, like cocobolo or koa, rather than more common woods, like maple or spruce?
March 23, 2018 at 11:32 am #16251yoavlanMemberother than simply using scales, what are the best ways of approaching an improvisation solo when jamming?
March 23, 2018 at 11:34 am #16252kate_lunaParticipantHello Andrew! My question is, how do you get out of a strumming rut? I have a strumming pattern that I have found myself stuck to ever since I was a beginner on ukulele. It works, but I would like to explore new strumming patterns and techniques. Especially since your video on percussive ukulele playing, I have been looking for new ways to spice up my strumming. Thanks!
March 23, 2018 at 11:38 am #16253brownizsParticipantWhich wood produces the “cleanest” ukulele sound?
March 23, 2018 at 11:47 am #16254dpav8rParticipantHello Andrew, Do you like the soprano long necks? And I sure would like that Jake model Uke.
March 23, 2018 at 11:49 am #16255ageorge99ParticipantI would say I’m still a pretty light intermediate ukulele player. The only way I’ve learned to play anything is through watching YouTube tutorials on specific songs. But now, I really want to understand the instrument and music theory and reading notes and all that. What would you say is the best way to start doing that?
