Hi Rock Class 101 Community!
We are back with site member challenge #24! WOW, there has now been over 800+ members participating in our challenges! If you’ve sat on the sidelines, please join us for this month’s challenge! Challenges are a fun way to stay motivated and a great way to meet fellow ukulele players who are passionate about learning and becoming better players 🙂 And I offer feedback on ALL submissions!
Please watch the video above and read instructions below carefully for details/instructions on this month’s challenge.
This month’s challenge is tied to our MUSIC READING COURSE. While tabs are available for each of the songs, I’d encourage you to go through the course and perform the piece by reading the standard notation. You can play the melody by itself, or play along to the harmony track (included in the on-screen tab viewer). Premium membership is required to access the complete course.
* Note: Some of these songs are arranged as solo ukulele pieces. Those arrangements will not count for this month’s challenge. LINKS 1-4 require premium membership to access.
Pick 1 from the following 5 Rock Class 101 Music Reading Course Lessons:
1) “Ode To Joy” by Beethoven – Can be played on High or Low G.
2) “Aura Lee” – Can be played on High or Low G.
3) “Scarborough Fair” – Can be played on High or Low G.
4) “Greensleeves” – Low G Ukulele Lesson.
5) “Bourrée” by J.S. Bach (LOW G UKULELE LESSON) – This classical duet demonstrates counterpoint, whereas there are two melodies that move independently of one another. One melody is played by the ukulele and the other by the U-Bass.
6) “Bourrée” by J.S. Bach (U-BASS LESSON) * – This classical duet demonstrates counterpoint, whereas there are two melodies that move independently of one another. One melody is played by the ukulele and the other by the U-Bass. * Taught in its entirety for FREE!
** If you need assistance with how to record yourself check out our FREE course on recording audio/video and/or private message me and I will be happy to help you out. **

Recommended Piece: Scarborough Fair, Greensleeves, Bourrée

GROUND RULES FOR PARTICIPATION:
1. Post your Youtube, Vimeo, or Soundcloud links of you playing 1 of the 5 Reading Course pieces anytime between Friday, February 1st till Thursday, February 28th, 11:59pm EST.
The upload feature on the site only supports file sizes up to 5 MB. Members must host their own files. Creating an account is easy and free 🙂 Here are the links to create an account:
YouTube (For Video) – https://www.youtube.com/create_channel
SoundCloud (For Audio) – https://soundcloud.com/signin
2. Submit individually, as a reply, IN THIS POST.
3. Feel free to submit more than one video for the challenge, but additional videos will not count as extra entries into the raffle for the prize.
4. Have fun and don’t be intimidated by this challenge!!! Use this challenge to help you set goals and complete them by a deadline. You can also use this as an opportunity to chat with your fellow Rock Class 101 members and share tips or tricks on this challenge that you think are useful.
5. You must perform the entire piece to receive an entry into the prize raffle.
* Note: In my opinion, it is better to show progress versus perfection with these challenges. So if you are a beginner and can only play the first couple of measures. That is completely ok. If you play two more measures of the next challenge piece than you did the previous one, you are on track to getting better. This is what these challenges are about… you learning ukulele and getting better. Remember we are all here to support you no matter what your current playing level is.

January 22, 2019 at 7:39 pm #24280becky7777ParticipantCongratulations for two years of challenges!!
January 22, 2019 at 8:12 pm #24281lisadmhParticipantGood challenge. Congrats on two years. I’ve been here since challenge #2, joined in the last couple of days of challenge #1.
Great uke too. I have a soprano islander andlove it. Concert size is missing from my collection, just sayin!
I commit to Bourée without tabs, no cheating.
January 22, 2019 at 10:33 pm #24294sprintingyoginiMemberYay! I started the course over the weekend and this challenge fits into what I want to work on! Plus, nice uke!
January 22, 2019 at 11:16 pm #24308wmc219MemberJanuary 23, 2019 at 5:31 pm #24325GabyParticipantOh this is a great motivation to properly focus on the course! I am really not sure if i can do it though. Both because of the time i will be able to put into it this month and my overall ability but i will give it a try 🙂
January 24, 2019 at 3:46 am #24347kayleighbMemberI’m baaaaaack! Looking forward to brushing up my music reading skills. I’m able to read music already but need to translate onto the uke. Looking forward to being back in the game 🙂
January 25, 2019 at 10:52 am #24379annefgodfreyParticipantThose learning Bouree might find of interest.
Perhaps Andrew would give extra credit to anyone who could perform the Baroque dance while playing ukulele version. Just kidding!January 25, 2019 at 6:04 pm #24385becky7777ParticipantAnne- I’m still a bit too broken to attempt a baroque dance, let alone while playing, but I would even without extra credit just to take you up on it to be goofy lol.
I AM going to steal the fancy finger flutter thing Phil does in the lute recording and try to apply a bit of it to Andrew’s version.. (That alliteration was unintentional but I don’t know the name of the technique. lol.

January 30, 2019 at 3:53 pm #24792xeroxsinnerMemberPicked up a uke (my first instrument everrrrr unless triangle counts?) at the beginning of the year. Maybe it’s ballsy but I’m gunning for Scarborough Fair. I absolutely love the song, and while it looks challenging right now, I think a month is fair. =) Been working through Fur Elise for the same reason (music notation), looking forward to adding this.
First month as a member here, this challenge is a pleasant surprise!
February 1, 2019 at 7:31 am #24828deadbuggyParticipantI’m not tackling the music reading course just yet, so I chose the tab version of Bouree. The Polar Vortex kept me locked inside all week, so I’ve had nothing but time. And speaking of time, I finally learned how to use my metronome — very helpful!
Please enjoy the stutter step at the beginning, and the dazzling dismount at the end where I show-off the fact that I can find Am at various spots on the fretboard 🙂
February 1, 2019 at 4:13 pm #24831lisamccParticipantThat was lovely deadbuggy! Well done!
February 1, 2019 at 4:15 pm #24832lisamccParticipantQuick question to all those techno-peeps out there – what is the easiest way to record myself playing the duet (both instruments – split screen)
Sorry if this is a basic question.
Thank you!
🙂February 1, 2019 at 5:29 pm #24833rickeymikeParticipantDeadbuggy good job
lisa Definitely not a basic question It must be super tedious to record twice then splice so that the sound overlaps perfectly…Nice to find a simple way though.
